That Ford sudden acceleration problem

Hiya Scotty,

I live down the road from you in Nashville. I have a 2010 Explorer, V6, 4x4, 215K miles. Bought it a couple years ago from a buddy who owned a car auction in Clarksville. Corporate lease turn-in, very nice condition with mostly highway miles. I got a very good deal on it. I haven't driven it much. My main driver has been my '99 4Runner.

Since owning the Explorer, there have been several times where I have encountered the "sudden acceleration" issue when breaking. This issue with multiple Ford vehicles has been documented in many places online, and there was/is a class-action lawsuit related to that issue in 2013. I don't know if that was resolved or is still in litigation.

I've been driving for over 40 yrs., never had an accident. I'm a good, defensive driver, and I will tell you that there is no way I'm pressing the gas pedal while applying the brakes, which Ford seems to think is the problem. I'm not aware of any recalls or TSB related to this problem.

I watched your video on dealing with sudden acceleration, where your solution was to put the tranny into neutral. That's all well and good, and obviously it would work...IF you have time to do it. The other day I was pulling into a parking space at Kroger, when the sudden acceleration occurred. Pretty tough to shift into neutral in time to avoid hitting a car parked 3 feet from you. I managed to avoid a collision, barely. Smoking tires, etc.

This Explorer is dangerous to drive. I could kill myself or someone else..never knowing when this problem could arise. I'm afraid to drive it. I certainly can't sell it to anyone in good conscience without telling them, and no one would buy it knowing the problem exists.

Are you aware of any fix for this issue? It's really a shame...the vehicle runs great otherwise, and is very clean in/out. Thanks.

Well, I haven't seen any fix for that. But you might try disconnecting the fuse for the cruise control. Sometimes cruise control systems will stick and do that. If that fixes it. I would just leave the cruise control off or spend a small fortune fixing it

Thanks, Scotty. I saw a video on YT about the CC wiring being an issue. I will pull that fuse and see what happens. I also looked thru the TSBs again on this vehicle and found this, from 2011. Looks like a brake override to address this, if I'm reading it correctly. I've been trying to get thru to a service department at any dealers around here to see if this TSB has been performed on my Explorer.
