Hello. I have a 4 cylinder engine with a timing chain. It currently has 120k miles and it is still running very well. How often am I supposed change the timing chain? While at it, how often should I change the cam shafts and valve lifters? I want to make my car last as long as possible.
It doesn't matter what car I have I just need to know how often I should change all those things to keep the engine running hopefully reaching half a million miles. Thanks
If you have a Triumph Stag you need to change the timing chains every 25,000 miles.
Now what was that about it not mattering what kind of car we're talking about?
The timing chain kit change out is vehicle specific. Some maintenance schedules call for a change at 120-15,000 miles. Some say it's a lifetime deal (like they say about lifetime transmission fluid, HA). If you hear a rattling sound for a few seconds on a cold start, it's time to change it. I have never had to change out camshafts or lifters in any vehicle I have owned. But then again, I am a maintenance nut.
typo correction - 120-150,000 miles.
I've never had timing chain noise or problems on any of my cars and I've run them to very high mileage (300K-400K miles). It depends on the engine design though and how it's maintained. (I'm pretty much a nutcase when it comes to maintenance. Some would say just in general. 😉 )
It doesn't matter what car I have
it does matter
how often I should change all those things
ideally never if you maintain it properly
Ok it is a Chrysler 2.4L engine with 4 speed trans. How often would you recommend? It has 120k and still running strong
What does the maintenance section of your owner's manual say??
