Towing need advice

Ok:

 

I need to tow 8,000-12,000 pounds once a month for a few days, Highway easy towing. 

based on the size of my garage:

I need to either get a 2008-2014 Toyota seqouia (5.7L, 4x4) rated at 10,000 pounds towing. 

or

a 2007-2014 Yukon Denali (6.2L, 4x4)  rated at 9500 pounds towing. 

—BUDGET IS LIMITED to under 12,000 bucks cash so it’s going to have some miles on it. 

-trucks are too big (small garage)

- can’t afford to pay someone to work on a diesel anything

-ford excursions and 2500 suburbans are all too old

-Cadillac Escalades are not well built it seems?

-older Toyota 4.7L engines not strong enough (I think?) 

-need to avoid 3/4 ton trucks cause of garage size, and brand new 1/2 tons that tow a lot cost too much. 

-I live near Canada, so it’s got to be a southern truck….everything up here affordable is rusted out )

 

convince me!    Ready go. 

(I love Toyota reliability,  but GM parts are cheaper?)

If you are looking to buy a vehicle that can tow 9500-10k pounds and may be towing more than that, it is going to cost you a lot more when you tear the vehicle to pieces.

Towing at a vehicles limit, or beyond it, is dangerous, and likely to damage the vehicle, as it is not intended to tow that much.

The Yukon is the exact same height as a Silverado (76 inches) and a pickup can tow more.

 

$12k isn't much to work with. See what's available around you and you'll have to pick the best of the bunch anyway.

And you'll be needing those parts a lot more often, so you probably aren't doing yourself much a favor. Ask yourself if you can afford the downtime and stress.  Besides they're not THAT much cheaper. $700 for failed modules is pretty expensive.


Thanks! Ya I am leaning towards the Toyota but They have more miles in my price range.

Also, the size of garage is about the LENGTH of vehicle, not height.

I am considering getting an older Toyota sequoia to do some heavy towing. 

the 10,000 pound towing limit would be exceeded by my towing.

It would be up to 12,000 pounds probably. 

1. I’ve heard people curse me for even considering this as I’m a safety hazard to everyone on the road…… (if I were to tow with this instead of a 3/4 ton). 

2. I’ve heard others say that the rear axle on these and the tundra are larger than an F350 and the auto manufacturers recommendation is ok given that I’ll be towing slowly, saftley, and through flat lands like Iowa. 

I am a Toyota guy, so I’m not excited to go after the 3/4 trucks as much cause Toyota stops at the tundra….. (and I don’t have $ to buy a new tundra so don’t suggest it)

Well they are excellent vehicles and they have plenty of power. But if you're talking about an older vehicle and you're going to be towing all that weight, you don't know how long it's going to last. The engines are strong but I don't know if the transmission could take all that weight over time

Adding to what Scotty said, its a function of your braking system too. Your brakes really weren't designed to be stopping 10-12k lbs. You'll want to engine brake for any long descends. 

What will you be towing and how frequently?
