Hey guys, sorry for the noob question, but my girlfriend has a Toyota 09 Corolla 1.8L engine. I was going to change her engine oil for her but I was watching a few youtube videos on how to do it and I realized it's not the standard oil filter I'm used to. I would say I'm pretty okay mechanical-wise. Changed wheel bearings, spark plugs, fuel pump, and so on. So I'm not super worried that I won't be able to get the job done I just have some questions about how to make it smoother.
1. What oil filter wrench do you recommend. The guys on youtube recommended one but it's currently unavailable and I was wondering if the standard 10-15 dollar one on eBay would be okay?
2. the oil filter housing has an upgrade to metal instead of the plastic housing. Should I upgrade to that in case, when trying to remove the current one I break it for some reason. (I live in the middle of nowhere so if it breaks I'm driving 1.5 hours to get to an auto parts store lol). Are the OEM plastic ones pretty durable? I saw a plastic one on eBay for about 20 bucks one would that be good as a back up or do I bite the bullet and pay the OEM from Toyota for whatever they charge (haven't been able to find the exact one but seeing them go for like $50)
Thanks in advance!
Yes upgrade to metal. Wipe the canister spotless/dry then use plumbers gloves or some other type of glove with a rubberized non-slip palm if there isn't a hex for a socket on it. It should only be snug.
When you get the upgrade make sure it has a fitting so you can use a standard socket/wrench.
Toyota 640 oil wrench is the proper one. But the standard14 flute 64mm oil wrench will work as well.. As for upgrading its not a bad idea. . Stay away from ebay. Most parts are fakes even if they come in OEM boxes. The plastic ones do break as they age. That's why alot of people wanted them to go all metal.
