2017 Toyota Highlander, 68000 miles. I think I should change the transmission fluid even though Toyota says it’s good for life. I think it has to be “flushed” and not drained - is that right? Should I just take this to an independent mechanic since Toyota doesn’t even think it should be done?
Do not flush it. Check the FAQ on this forum.
Drain and fill (with filter change) should suffice. I would do it now. Also, from this point onward, I would change the fluid no later than every 60,000 miles with the OEM fluid. Personally, I like to go more aggressive at every 40,000-50,000 miles.
Find a good, honest mechanic who has worked extensively with Japanese vehicles (including Toyota’s) and knows how to do this.
