Scotty,
I have a 2020 4runner and the power steering uses automatic transmission fluid. The fluid is an older style DEXRON III Should I replace it with a backwards Dex3 compatible ATF, could I convert it to regular power steering fluid or should I search high and low for the original DEXRON III ATF?
I would use exactly what the vehicle manufacturer recommends so you don't void out the warranty by using the wrong fluid. The car is only two years old it still might have a warranty on it. Different fluids may also cause the power steering to not work correctly or even eat the seals and cause a leak in the system.
I should probably add that the dealerships in Southern California will flush and fill these with regular power steering fluid.
Do whatever your owners manual tells you to do; the manufacturer knows the best about the car they have made.

Forget the dealership unless for warranty and recall work; they don't know what they're doing.
