Good evening!
I am trying to find a solid used SUV that I can have for a long time and hopefully be able to work on myself whenever issues come up(ideally I want to learn to do so as far as I am able to). At the moment I have my eyes on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Special Edition, 4 wheel drive, automatic transmission, with fewer than 140k miles, being sold at $4900(planning to try to get it to go lower) by what I think is a private seller on Facebook Marketplace given they only have one vehicle listed. Should I be wary since it is a Jeep, or wary due to that particular model? Is that a good price? Supposedly it is well maintained and with no issues, that would be subject to an inspection by a mechanic that I would have done before actually getting it anyway.
Beyond that though, are there any recommendations of years to look for or stay away from, along with brand(I have heard to stay away from VW and Chevy from Scotty's videos and other comments)? I am not wanting anything huge(I like smaller/compact vehicles), just a spacious, solid vehicle I can drive without major issues.
Hopefully this post was done correctly, I am new to this corner of the internet.
I’d instantly pass on the Jeep, What jeep is now is not what it was originally not even close. It’s just rebadged French/Italian made. Now if you found a late or early 90s jeep that was in great condition with the 4.0 in it I’d consider for sure. The best SUVs I think are early or mid 2000s GM Suburbans. You can rack some serious miles on those things and They were building them so much better back in those yrs and there are plenty of parts easily available for them. As always get a thorough check on any vehicle you are serious about. But definitely pass on any 2000 or newer Jeep’s.
Gotcha. So avoid the 2000s then. I am not sure if I have even seen a GM suburban around me.
Chevrolet Suburbans, Tahoe’s, GMC Yukon’s were all good back then.
