[Solved] Should I buy a Mazda 3 in Europe

Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you taking you time to read and try to answer my question. I want to buy a used car in Poland within the EU. I am looking for a 2015-2017 Mazda 3 2.0 or Honda civic 2.0 Gasoline engines. I can find a Mazda 3 which has the USA engine of 165Hp while in EU we have a 120HP engine. From my research these are basically exactly the same engine, but different compressions. My question is will I be able to find parts for the USA engine within Poland. The ones from USA are about 5-10,000PLN (1.5-2.500 USD) cheaper.

There must be a reason for this. I'm guessing it has to be parts and labor might make the difference. I asked my mechanic about it, but he hasn't had much experience with these types of vehicles. The local car parts dealer says there are plenty of parts, but they will say anything to sell you parts. My question is if anyone has any experience with this within the EU.

I can also buy a Honda Civic 2.0 CVT transmission. However, I am not a fan of CVT transmissions, and they are overall more expensive then the Mazda. Any and all experience and knowledge will be appreciated. I also need to buy an automatic transmission, as my wife requires one ;).

Well, I don't know if you can find parts for those in Poland. They do have different specifications. You'd have to check that out yourself. As for your other question, I would definitely get the Honda there. CVTs are much better than Mazda

Thank you for the advice.

Well that Mazda uses an automatic and it is better than the Civic's questionable CVT.

USA engine of 165Hp while in EU we have a 120HP engine

The difference is ecology software, you can also get a 165 horsepower engine in the EU, it's called "G165"

The euro "G165" is actually more powerful than the US "i" models with 5 more KWs of output.

My question is will I be able to find parts for the USA engine within Poland

As far as I know it shouldn't be an issue - besides engines are usually the one of the most reliable parts of a Japanese car (and it's not like people rebuild engines anymore, especially not Japanese ones, rebuilds on those are more expensive than used engines even with cheap labor)

My question is if anyone has any experience with this within the EU.

Moderator @G-T might have experience on that subject.

Honda Civic 2.0 CVT (...) However, I am not a fan of CVT transmissions

Yes Honda CVTs aren't great, especially when mated to larger engines.

I personally would go for the Mazda between those two, they're lovely cars - maybe the 120 horsepower variant is even better, you'll be straining the engine less.

Also what about a Toyota Avensis? you can find a turbo diesel (even in the super practical Estate form) with a conventional automatic - the only issue I know of on those are weak timing chains.

I'm not familiar with parts avaliability.
Check what modifications are needed to meet requirements in your country.
Where I live, vehicles coming from the US market must have lighting equipment processed in accordance with the EU regulations that require asymmetric light beam, adequate turn indicators and adapted electrical connection.
