Hi Scott,
I am thinking about buying a used 2017 lexus NX. It's been in one accident and had 2 previous owners. Should I be weary or are the NX' typically a good buy?
Thank you,
Afia
I would avoid that one - it’s been in accident. Just realize it’s a fairly new (several years old) turbocharged engine with 3 thermostats (more complexity) and won’t last as long as a naturally aspirated engine - assuming you wanted to keep for a very long time and rack up the miles well past 100/150,000 miles. Aside from that they are decent vehicles and I trust Toyota’s turbocharged engines over the luxury competition. But personally I’d go for the RX350 with the true and tried naturally aspirated V6.
See below for further assessment on the Nx:

And the engine in both the NX and RX has both port and direct injection, which is a big plus so you won’t have to worry about carbon buildup on the back of the intake valves like so many other cars.
I say, unless you a seasoned used car buyer, my advise is that you stay away from all cars that have been in accidents, cars that are relatively recent but with history of multi-ownership, outright.
And from your inquiry, … I understand that you are not a seasoned car buyer, so stop thinking, walk away from this car! Look for another candidate: with no accidents, one rightful owner, … and have a trusty mechanic’s number on your speed dial as you looking. fwiw.
F.S.
So you are going to be the third owner of a 3 year old car? And its been in an accident. No way for me.
The turbo charged NX uses premium gasoline. If gas price is expensive in your area, you may consider a naturally aspirated engine.
