I have a rare car I am trying to find again and I am slowly decoding the VIN. I have more than half of it, but I need two more sections to complete it. One being a single check digit. Is there a way I can find out the check digit of a car without actually having the VIN. So far I have JT2MA67L-F0- - - - - -. The check digit is supposed to go after the L and as you know all cars have a check digit. I followed a VIN decoder for this specific car and so far I have all the right characters. But however is the check digit able to retrieve without the full vin? Car is a 1985 Toyota Supra
You gotta understand your request and approach are very suspicious, regardless of your actual intentions.
If you're trying to track the vehicle to make an offer to the owner, post a "looking to buy" with the year, make and model of the vehicle (and color if your remember it) on any of the popular buy/sell forums.
I mean I have pictures of the car to prove I used to own it and a greattt story to probably cool the atmosphere but I don’t know if looking to buy posts will help especially if I don’t know where the car is or if the owner will even see something like that.
Again, regardless of your intentions, you can provide as much evidence as possible, but you sold the car and looks like you're having seller's remorse. No one here can know for sure what you're trying to achieve, and the way you're going about it doesn't look good.
Maybe looking to buy posts won't help much, but I'm pretty sure asking for a random VIN on a forum doesn't help either... I'd still take my chances on the former, considering your opening statement about the car being "rare".
the vin should be stamped into several places. At least one of them should be recoverable.
Yeahhhh you see that’s the only problem, when I said I was trying to find the rare car again, I meant it literally the car is like gone, sold, given away, and I’m trying to piece the vin together and I have no images or the actual vin plate to refer to. So here I am tryna figure out what the check digit could be without actually having the car. It’s either a number from 1-9 but I don’t know how to figure out what number it is.
Your question says "I have a rare car". In English that means you have something in your possession.
My fault, typed it in a rush, it’s a car I only used to have and no longer have papers for.
So far I have JT2MA67L-F0- - - - - -
I think that without the serial number you're wasting your time
Any ideas on how I can get the VIN then without any papers of the car only drivers license? DMV knows they have it especially after the extremely guilty looks they gave me, and they know where the car is too but dmv being dmv they won’t tell me jack. Also have the old license plate number from 2004 but of course that’s out of service and at absolute 0 use to me. Some people say Private Investigator can get me the car location, VIN and owner. But not sure what to do as Private Investigator’s are expensive and not sure if they will even find it.
I wouldn't want the DMV to help people find me either.
I mean it wasn’t really in a way that it was weird, it was more formal the way I came to them, I asked if it is possible for the DMV to contact the owner and ask if they are comfortable with me contacting them.
I don't want my tax dollars paying for DMV employees to do private investigation and helping people find cars either.
I mean government used tax dollars for wayyy worse things like maintaining vacant buildings where crime like murder happens inside.
good luck
Any chance you took it in for an oil change or for work done at the dealer or at the shop. They may have your VIN stored on the computer. Unless it was so long ago.
They don’t have it sadly already checked.

You should have kept the registration if you ever planned on repurchasing that car someday. Personally, I find that kinda creepy. It's standard procedure to empty the glovebox after the customer purchases the car, except for the owner's manual. You were supposed to keep a copy in your vehicle at all times, while you were owning it. The stereotypical "license and registration, please." comes to mind when you're being pulled over by the police.
I had license and regristration for the car inside the car but after selling it got rid of all that stuff because I never thought I would ever need it again until I really missed the car.
