Volvo xc60 or bmw x3 in Europe

Hey Scotty,

Between a 2015 bmw x3 (petrol) with 24000 miles for 15k and a 2018 volvo xc60 (diesel) with 105000 miles for 23k which car would be a wiser option? Both cars have automatic transmissions, have allegedly highway miles on them and don't come from a dealership. I'm worried about reliability.

Thanks a lot!

The X3 will soon turn into an endless money pit, where’s the diesel Volvo is high mileage. They’re both overpriced.

Are these choices final?

These cars are not for me but for my father who asked for my opinion. He is the one who's gonna drive them. I've explained to him that the bmw would be a money pit but he thinks that these are good deals considering the starting price of the cars. Keep in mind that we live in Europe where taxes are really high and used cars prices are almost identical to the new ones.

Oh okay, in Europe parts might be a LOT cheaper and if he is hell bent on those choices, I’d probably go with the diesel Volvo. The X3 has atrocious reliability.

In my opinion he should opt for a Honda crv or a lexus nx ( the rx's are way cheaper but heavily taxed) but he has a mindset where every car would be fine if you maintain it properly. Also volvos have good reputation in Europe as really reliable cars, so he's more into that...

Fully agree with your choice. It’s his money & his choice really, but I’d definitely pick up a Volvo over a BMW. See if he can find another low mileage Volvo if he must only have a European vehicle.

@inthrustwetrust
Maybe he should consider leasing too. Anyway thanks for the advice. I appreciate it!😁

100.000 miles for a volvo 5 cylinder diesel engine is nothing (asuming it is a 5 cyl.) timing belt should be replaced at that milage though. Do not go for the BMW, lots of problems
