Hey Scotty, what is your professional opinion on Volkswagen and Volvo as far as reliability and affordability for maintenance in America?  Is a VW GTI a good car to have?

Volvo, you don't see a lot on the road, so if something goes wrong, you are going to wait for parts and it will be expensive.

VW? I owned one, it was a pile of junk, you can check my previous posts, I asked for a lot of help here. I traded in before it hits 150k miles (I keep it in myCarfax, the current owner hasn't posted anything like oil change, maybe it broke down already). AC wasn't working well(passenger side doesn't have air, max air = my Camry's lowest air), light wasn't working, tranny clunk in reverse and downshift, seats are hard rock hard, passenger side window malfunction, too hard to do any DIY job (20+ mins to do engine air filter change, my Camry? less than a minute), engine leaking oil. Timing belt replacement cost $1500+ (last year)

No.  If you like them, just lease and return before the warranty expires.  I would not own either of them out of warranty.

I see. I considered one, but Scotty shed some light on them and I suspected they were money pits...
I had someone offer a trade for a 2010 is the reason why I started with the question.

New? not great at all. Not too terrible but not something I'd recommend.

If we are talking about older cars like late model year XC70 T5 are unbeatable and solid.

All of the good VWs are too old to recommend, new ones with TSI/TFSI and DSG are just piles of garbage.

Is a VW GTI a good car to have?

Have? Yeah, Own? No.
