[Solved] What can I do as a consumer?

Hi Everyone, I have a 2006 Honda Accord V6 with 177k miles. I'm reaching out to figure out what I can do as a consumer with the mechanic I've been dealing with.

Last year summer time this car's AC was working wonderfully until the AC started to give out, the AC would always work 24/7 up until that point when it gave out. The car has been without AC for the whole fall, winter and spring months up until recently where I went to a mechanic (well the owner of the shop, he has two workers underneath him) who I've dealt with several times before to first test and verify that the AC compressor was going out. He is about 45 minutes from where I live, about a 30 mile drive just going there. They came to me verifying that it indeed was and it needed to be replaced, I of course assumed the worse and had them go ahead to replace it. The owner ordered the part and it was basically a waiting game at this point, it took about a little over a week (this was around Memorial Day Weekend). I mention this because normally he orders parts and it's there same day, next day or even two days but never over a week. Eventually, the part arrived and they put it on. Great! Payed them for the work (about $485.00) and off I went with Ice Cold AC! Next day, I noticed that the AC compressor was not fully engaging as it should. It would try to turn on but immediately turn off. It would short cycle. The AC wasn't blowing as cold, this would happen randomly but often it would be at idle, but after a while it would fix itself right up and blow cold again. I contacted the mechanic and he told me to bring it over to get it checked out. At first I said maybe it's the AC compressor and he immediately ruled that out as a possibility and that it might be some electrical problem or something. I went to him over 4 times. He checked the electrical systems with his fancy scan tool and the electrical systems read OK. He checked the pressure lines they're okay. He checked the freon level, it's okay. He checked to make sure the AC would drip and not just sweat, also okay. So he started doing things such as making sure the lines were cleaned out within and had no air or deposits since we hadn't had AC for months and then he also changed the AC pressure switch which he charged me $80 for. None of these things fixed the issue and I called him today about an hour ago and he's lost for words and says he doesn't know what else it could be. I asked him if I can be refunded for the work for the pressure switch since it didn't fix the issue and he stood silent for a bit and said he needs time to think this through and to figure out what to do next. He told me to call him in the morning. I don't know what else he can possibly think of, I mean if he checked everything under the sun but the actual ac compressor he put on. I'm thinking at this point it is the compressor but he just doesn't believe that it could be it due to the fact he has repaired many cars with AC compressor problems and none of them have ever failed.

I'll say this, I as a consumer am frustrated because having to take the car to get repaired and only to come out with a problem still and constantly having to wake up early morning spending time and gas to go down there and back 60 miles not getting any solution. But I do understand that he doesn't want to spend much time either figuring out what's wrong and spending time where he is running his business and having to make ends meet. We're both upset. Forgive me for the messy writing and any lack of knowledge there of, I'm just spewing out what I have running around in my head. Nonetheless, what should I do? Or what can I do as a consumer? Should I give them another chance or should I ask for a full refund and go somewhere else? I just don't want to keep going back and forth and not getting the problem fixed. I do appreciate you guys taking the time to read this and any advice would be great, thank you!

I'm just very upset with how this whole thing is turning out right now, I know he is too.

Fixed! The culprit was the dryer, the thing was worn out and those little silicone balls were out of the dryer and some even as far as going through the system towards the condenser. The A/C would give out but much more frequent on hot days so I imagine those silicone balls with the heat wasn't doing much good and cause the problem. Glad it's been fixed and I wasn't charged for the work either, I'm as happy as a clam!

Any mods available can mark this thread resolved!

Glad it was finally solved. You can select the check mark (to the left of your answer) and it will mark as resolved.

Okay, I did it. Thank you very much!

I’m going through the similar symptoms with my Toyota matrix. Modern AC systems have all types of failsafe components To protect the compressor. Sometimes it takes more than a fancy scan tool to diagnose an electrical problem. It takes a working knowledge to interpret the data along with the symptoms. And sometimes a mechanic has to keep the vehicle long enough for for the symptoms to show up. Takes some time and patience, something a lot of garages don’t feel like they have.

Scotty has a video where he uses an electrical switch to bypass all The electronic failsafes for a non-working Honda air conditioner. He just toggles the compressor on and off when he turns the AC on and off. It could be there was never any real problem with your compressor unit. Could have been some of the failsafe electronic components.  At this point it may be impossible to say for sure.

My advice is to call your mechanic back in the morning as he suggested. See what he has to say. maybe come back to this forum and ask for advice before throwing any more money in the direction of that garage.

Yeah I saw that you have a Squirrelly AC, no luck either eh? It's funny because it happened right in front of his face when plugged his scan tool in but I guess you're right we'll need to further test the electrical lines. It's just so frustrating spending time and money and still no solution. Doesn't help with this heat wave. I'll definitely let you guys know what he tells me tomorrow morning.

Alright it's official, he's doing the parts cannon approach. I called him and now he's saying it could be the dryer (right above the pressure switch) or the expansion valve (down the firewall). I told him to try to do the electrical bypass tests and he said it's not necessary because his programs said everything is okay. I feel like yanking my hairs out, he says he wants to see this through to the end but I only have so much money and I'm not trying to throw away anymore money on stupid guesses. To make matters worse today the compressor practically crapped out like it would not engage almost indefinitely. Didn't matter what I was doing, idling or riding at highway speeds and the stupid thing still didn't kick in. I got home sweating cause this darn thing doesn't seem to wanna work anymore. I guess the heat really is stressing this thing out. I don't know what to do anymore. I've tried telling him to do what Chuck, you (Wretch) and others have said and even things I tried googling and researching on and he still just shuts it down completely with some excuse. I'm pissed off.
