Hey Scotty,

My friend is replacing his 2007 Rav4 becausing of oil burning for his mom. He is thinking of a modern small crossover like the mazda cx-5 etc. I recommended the 2017 Cr-v with the 2.4L I4. The 1.5 Turbo has oil delusion issues. The really like this car over any Subaru Toyota Korean Car or Mazda. Im concerned that the CVT may be unreliable but it was introduced in the cr-v in 2015 model year so did they work out most of the major kinks in it? All in all, would this model hold the reliable reputation of the CR-V and last at least 250.000 miles without major repairs?

Plz dont recommend a newer Rav4 they HATE it.

it is salvage title and has 20k miles on it for $15k

Oh dear, run away from it!!
Scotty said the 1.5L turbo engine had oil dilution problems. The 2.4L NA engines are pretty reliable. Hondas have always had relatively weak CVTs compared to Toyota and the CVT is the weakest link in most of their vehicles (apart from the turbos).

Yup, with the 2.4L NA, the CR-V should be good. Scotty has made a video on the 2016 CR-V, watch it.

If the vehicle isn’t driven hard, the CVT should make it to 250,000 miles provided the previous owners have taken good care of the vehicle.

As with any used car, get it inspected by an honest mechanic, before you buy it.

Thanks it helps!

@inthrustwetrust
the cv-t was introduced on the cr-v in 2015. And consumer reports reliability survey from 2015 says that it was "troublesome". The 2017 was good,. Do you think the 2016 had a soldi cv-t or no? Also scotty reviewed the engine in a 2016 crv which had the 2.4L and said it had oil delussion issues. As far as i know that is only on the 1.5T? So is the engine in the 2017 LX 2.4 solid, and is the tranny better than in 2015?
Thx

@inthrustwetrust
Stay away from CVT as much as you can. The oil dilution issue is for the 1.5T, but if you have a worn engine, you may experience it. Thats' one of the reasons that a professional mechanics should check the car before you buy it

@yaser
It only comes with a CVT but is the cv-t better than the ones in let's say Subaru or the transmissions in Mazda's? It only has 21k and a mech. will check it out so is the CVT a reason to break the deal bc shouldn't the CVT's from this model year last at least 150k or so. the 2015 had problems and i know in general honda automatics are weak but they can last 200 300k if taken care of???

@inthrustwetrust

There are mixed comments. A mech. will check it out to make sure the engine isn't worn and it only has 21k miles. The competition is basically Mazda and Subaru and as far as I know the CV-T is much better than the auto's of those companies.

@kerem-umut-kerem
Indeed, you’re right. However the salvage title makes it worthless & a very risky purchase.

@inthrustwetrust
I see, but if a mechanic checks it out and makes sure that it doesn't affect the vehicles powertrain, than it should be fine right? My father owns a Salvage Odyssey and used to own a salvage corolla and neither have that many problems.

@kerem-umut-kerem
It may run fine, however the value significantly reduces. I’d rather own a clean title for the same price.

Avoid. Look for a earlier CRV from 2014 earlier.

@mrrangerzr1

why? This one doesn't have the oil dellusion issues of the 1.5T and the CVT had problems in 2015 but they solved it for 2017? The autos in Honda's are not that strong yes but wouln't this be a better alternative to a Subaru automatic or Mazda? The Rav4's are garbage from this year.
