What gear should I be in?

2007 Toyota Hilux, 2.5 Turbo diesel 4 cylinder, 5 forward standard transmission. I’m new to standards. Car is in great condition mechanically.

They’re a lot of long hills where I live.

2nd gear feels good, still get some power and acceleration on these hills but is a bit too slow, I don’t like to rev the engine above 3000. At 2500rpms in going 40kph and I’ve got cars behind me honking to speed up.

In 3rd gear it’s faster but the engine feels really sluggish and the rpm’s will drop to about 1500. If i put my foot down I get little to no acceleration in 3rd but it’s faster than 2nd.

I’m worried that in lugging the engine at 1500 revs in 3rd and I don’t want to rev it too high in 2nd to wear out the engine. The engine produces peak torque from 1500-2500 and peak power at 3500.

What gear/rpms should i drive at for longevity of the car?

Peak torque from 1500-2500 .

Drive in 2nd with your foot down, that’s how I climbed hills when I used to drive my turbo diesel..

As long as you’re below redline, you’ll be fine.

50 kph is about 30 mph so 25 mph in 2nd sounds good to me. just smile and wave to the honkers as they go by

Warming up cold engines (when you drive of course) and normal driving:

- between 2000 and 3000 rpm for gasoline

- between 1000 and 2000 rpm for diesel

Acording to that you decide what gear you use.

To satisfy honkers behind you mash the pedal to the metal.  Diesel motors will let you know what they need.  When you need more speed they will either beg for more fuel or more gear.  If you do not give them enough fuel, they will go slower.  If they need more gear they will over rev.  To be safe you must keep up with traffic.  You cannot make RPM your top priority.  That is why there is adjustment to the accelerator pedal.  Pissing off those behind you is not safe driving either.

You didn't say what the speed limit was where you were doing about 25MPH.  Maybe cars behind you had a good reason for honking.

Nice! The limit is 50Km/h. 2nd gear 2500 RPM 40km/h feels good. I could probably knock it up to 50km/h in 2nd gear and i’ll be closer to 3000rpm. Just worried about keeping the engine at 3000RPM along this whole uphill road (about 30 mins drive). Redline in 4500
