What to do with an older, unserviced transmission?

I have a 2017 Camry 4-cyl, 237,000 miles, with a 5-speed non-CVT transmission. The transmission has never been serviced. For the past 50,000 miles, it stutters when accelerating out of 2nd gear. This only happens when the transmission is cold and doesn't happen again for the rest of the day. My mechanic suggests leaving it alone. My car had a recall and I had to take it to the Toyota dealer. The service manager at the dealership suggested otherwise. He said I should have the fluid "gravity flushed" and refilled with new ATF and an additive that will increase the fluid's viscosity. I declined the dealership's suggestion. Was I right? Should I continue to drive this car until the tranny gives up the ghost? Should I get is serviced?

Was I right?

no. CVTs need to be serviced pretty often, so it's no wonder it's failing. I'm amazed it lasted 237k without service.

See our FAQ.

Yes service it to make it last as long as possible. But it's probably on its last leg.

He said it's not a CVT, so at that mileage probably best to leave it alone at this point.

oops. yeah just ride it out.
