Hi,
I'm looking to buy a used SUV such as Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4, Lexus NX, Subaru Crosstrek and Forrester for 2015 or 2016. I'm looking at all the car problems/recalls and I don't know if I should choose from the models listed or I should look for something else. I want to buy a reliable vehicle that is not overly expensive, AWD or 4WD because I live in Canada and snow banks, slushy roads and icy conditions is part of life for 6 months of the year. I like cars that are fun to drive and I currently drive an 2001 Audi a4 quattro that is falling apart. I don't know anything under the hood and I would really appreciate any help I can get.
Hey Scotty we are looking to purchase a new luxury vehicle and so far we really like the new 2020 Lincoln corsair it is awd and has a 2.0t 4 cylinder engine is there anything we should be concerned about with this vehicle? also this vehicle is 42k after mark downs and rebates what else could be get in this segment of vehicles that is as luxurious as the Lincoln for the same money thanks for your time!
I would not buy a Lincoln with that tiny engine, the car is too big for that small engine
I’m looking to buy a 2017 Kia Sportage Sx Turbo. Is this a reliable SUV? Thanks
I’ve been watching your channel for a while Scotty, and have been considering buying a new car, but I’m really specific on what type of car I want to buy!
for reliability Lexus, Toyota and Honda, for performance Audi or BMW. Volvo is a nice middle ground 🙂
Avoid European. Endless money pits as Scotty would say.
Sorry I would never suggest Volvo, way to much for parts labor, I am also not big on Subaru there motors head gasket issues.and expensive, I am sticking with Toyota, Honda,
I'm deciding to buy my first SUV like Nissan rogue 2015 or GMC Terrain 2015 what do you think about those two thank you
Hello Scotty! I love your videos, they r very informative. I want to buy a reliable mid size SUV and know that Japanese made cars r the best, however I’d like to ask you about the new 2020 Lincoln Aviator and Lincoln in general. Do u think it’s a good made vehicle and company? Would u invest in a Lincoln in this day and age?
thanks
I would not I would still go Japanese
Scotty, which used SUV should I buy: a 2014 Subaru Forester with 58,000 miles, or a 2016 Chevy Equinox with 72,000 miles?
I'm not scotty but he will say the Subaru in this case. That GM is a pile of junk
Subaru will outlast that equinox 3x. Equinox is a 120k vehicle before it will fall apart. Might have some maintenance on the Subaru but it will easily go 250k. Change the oil, coolant, etc and you'll be happy.
Greetings Scotty, what are the options for a reliable SUVs besides Rav4 and CR-V because the Rav4 is not sold here and the CR-V is too overpriced?
Scotty
i want to buy my wife the best 2017-2018 (reliable and fun to drive) midsized suv I can. Looking at Lexus GX , Highlander and 4Runner. What do you think?
- Subaru
Hey, scotty i need help to pick out a car for my sister. she looking for a new SUV since her small little 2005 nissan maximum has so many problems to a point where she will go broke. ive told her about a 2004 toyota Rav4 with 123K miles for $2,200 and at a acura Mdx 2005 with only 100k miles for $3,500 but as a stuburn sister she is shes trying to go for a car a little bit newer. both SUV's were clean as heck and very well kept. How can i help her and convice her that both the cars found are good SUV to last longer and for cheaper than the bigger and more expensive luxury cars she wants to get?
I live in a state that snows a decent amount but has very bipolar weather. My dream car is the Lexus IS 350 2014-2017. But I’ve been thinking maybe I should buy an SUV and I really hate the look of the older Toyota RAV4 so I would not buy one unless it was a 2019 model. That being said it’s a newer car and more expensive because I’d want the limited (them heated seats are a must) and it being a newer year insurance and tags would be more expensive as well. I also considered the Mazda CX-5 but it isn’t Toyota/Lexus so I’m not sure how durable and reliable they are. Anyone have any opinions?
I forgot to mention that it would be an AWD Lexus IS of course! But I’m worried about the clearance mainly. But is an older Lexus better than a newer Toyota?
If it snows a decent amount then any vehicle that has 4x4 or AWD will you do much good. I own a 2010 Camaro ss and in the winter time even with winter tires, sandbags in the back and much more to prepare for the winter it still slides around as if I were running slicks on it and trying to drive it in the snow. My truck on the other hand, an 07 Silverado 1500, as soon as it snows I put it in 4x4 and it drives as if the snow weren't even there even with my tires almost bald. Of course i still reccomend to drive it safely whether there is snow or no snow but my point here is if there is any amount of snow that covers the streets where you live then getting a vehicle with 4x4 will be your best and safest way to go.
Base model - Is it a good buy? Also looking for aftermarket options for a Power Liftgate
My daughter is going to buy a 2020 suv and was thinking about the Rav4, I am helping her with her decision and liked the Rav4 over the Honda crv. But now have read very good reports on the Mazda CX 5 so maybe that is the direction I should tell her to consider. What is your opinion ?
Well, … just me opinionated:
I say, test drive all three. Yes. Primarily, … there is a big difference how each drives, … puts one at ease.
RAV4: … a Maytag on wheels. Not very reassuring. Lacks directional sense. Requires constant driver corrections. Annoying. Very loud when briskly accelerating. Transmission, … transmission mostly very confused - keeps hunting for a higher gear, endlessly! Fuel economy as advertised. [Disclosure, … a family member owns ‘19 model, bit over 32,000 km - no mechanical issues, so far.]
CRV: … if only it was still powered by that 2.4 litre, … now no longer available, engine, … and that CVT-feeling contiguous invasion [Disclosure: … I drive ‘10 CRV - no mechanical issues whatsoever for last 10+ years.
CX-5: … Zoom-Zoom! I’m not sure if they still use this line, … [Disclosure: … my summer driver is ‘04 Miata - darn two shifter rubber bellows: … just watch those for rips, … replace often, especially the one bolted on to the transmission turret, … but I digress grossly, forgive me.]
Bottom line: … just choose the one that makes you feel most comfortable, safe, … and at ease!
Best,
F.S.
Hi Scotty Been a fan of your youtube channel for years keep up the good work very informative and helpful videos.
I am in the U.K and my daughter is about to have a baby and needs a bigger car .She currently has an Audi 2011 A1 and want to get an SUV .She has seen a Nissan Qashqai Tekna 1.2 2015 WITH 60000 Mileage .What is your thought on this ? Or could you recommend a reliable SUV for Uk around £12000 so around $15500 Thanks for your time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsUPlNlNhi8 Straight from the horses mouth. Don't buy the Nissan they make horrible cars and definately get rid of the Audi they make even worse cars than Nissan
Buy a rav4 or crv or lexus rx350
Ellis, thank you for asking.
I'll give you my opinion from personal experience. I would have a difficult time going against the RAV 4. I currently have a 2012 Toyota Highlander Hybrid with 158k on it. Toyotas are absolutely bullet proof. Mechanically, cosmetically, interior materials...these things just do not wear out. With the improvements in the RAV 4 appointment wise, these are a very nice option in the smaller SUV market.
Mazdas are a fairly solid vehicle, but they aren't in the same league as Toyota. Neither is the Honda...but it's close. My choice would be Toyota, then Honda and lastly, Mazda. They're all good but the Toyota is the pick of the litter.
@aestroh55
Thanks Alan and more convinced on a Rav 4
@aestroh55
Just found an article for you: https://www.thethings.com/dont-buy-the-2020-toyota-rav4-before-reading-this/
Only thing is that both Honda and Toyota have relatively new gen. engines (and transmission and TNGA platform too in case of Toyota) and they've had lots of issues (1.5L Honda oil dilution problems and 8 speed Direct Shift Toyota; Scotty also mentioned both; just search for "toyota 8 speed transmission issues"). I would not have recommended Mazda over Toyota or Honda 3 years ago as last generation vehicles from the last 2 manufacturers were much more tried and tested at that time; still true for many models such as 4Runner and V6 Honda engined cars).
Mazda Skyactiv engines and transmission have been unchanged since 2012 (very advanced for that era and still far ahead of most competition) and have a much better track record. Interiors are also far better (esp. in area of soft-touch plastics) as Mazda is not trying to direct well-heeled buyers who want nicer touches towards Lexus or Acura.
Rav4
Hi Scotty/everyone.
I'm currently deciding what used SUV to buy, it has come to (no specifically order):
1. 2010 Acura RDX
2. 2010 Acura MDX
3. 2010 Highlander AWD
4. 2011 Honda Crosstour AWD
5. 2011 Pilot AWD
6. 2011 Mercury Mariner v6 AWD
All of them with around 50k miles...
I do requiere awd, as I travel 3 times a week to a ranch trough a 5 mile gravel/dust/mud road and in rain season gets really muddy and no awd cars struggle to go trough (sometimes we need to pull them out). I'm by no means interested in serious trailblazing, just would like peace of mind when going there that Im not getting stuck. Other than that permanent awd in rainy highway might help. It will be my daily drive, so im looking for something not so rugged (and comfortable) and with decent acceleration for highway (4-6 hours of single lane road a week, so i need that punch to overpass trucks and semis)
I might not need something as big as the Highlander or Pilot, but my main concern is reliability. I've read mixed reviews for acuras about torque converter and oil burning issues.
What is the safest bet? Are the issues on Acuras really common?
Can't wait to read your thoughts guys.
