i have worked on cars on my own for about 8 years and i have had automotive classes in school

That's it ... high school? You and every 2nd guy, so that doesn't really give you a competitive edge.

I believe you were advised to seek training almost 3 years ago. How did that go?

Enroll yourself into ASE or whatever automotive programs your local technical college offers. Or maybe GM has their own academies.  Otherwise, to them you're no different than every other self-taught schmo out there. If that's all you have then you'll need some other quality that sets you apart from everyone else. But, ultimately your level of education will dictate how far you get.

If you really have the skills & experience to start doing the easy jobs, then you need to talk to your manager.  Opportunities don't usually fall into our laps ... you have to make them. Have you told anybody that you're interested in any position? If so, then they should have pointed you in the right direction.

Ask for more responsibility and see what he says. Either he'll say OK, or no, you need to do 'X' first.

Work as hard as you can every day. Finish all your responsibilities, and then go find some more. Make the shop sparkle. Organize the tools. Sweep the front lot. Repair the broken carts, etc. And then when you're done, ask your supervisor what else needs to get done. Earn the promotion. Show initiative.

I don't know about you, but at all the companies I've worked at, promotions weren't automatic, and showing up for work didn't earn you a promotion either.

i was just looking for a rough estimate

are you certified or have any kind of formal training?

You're starting at the bottom then. Have patience, it will take a while to work your way up through the ranks and dealerships are notoriously cheap.

It depends on the policies of the company you work for, your experience and education level, and your work history - none of which are known to us here.

  • I have been working at Sutton Chevrolet for a while now. I have not been all to do anything but clean. I want to work on cars there but they haven't told me anything about it when I asked. I could use some help as to if or when I might be able to work on anything there. I have the knowledge to do it and they have even let people who do not know much to work on cars. I just want to know if i should ask them or wait or quit. I love to work on cars but I don't know what to do since they don't let me.

Well that does open up your options. If you're not happy where you are, then you can start asking around at other shops.

I thought the movie Flamin Hot was a really good true life lesson on how to move up in whatever field you are in.

It was a fun movie to watch as well, I suggest you check it out.
