When replacing engine gaskets and seals...

I have a donor motor with 120k miles on it, it's a 2.2L Ecotec, it's going in a 2010 Chevy HHR LS.

I just bought a bunch of replacement parts, a gaskets and rubber seals kit (valve stem seals, fuel injector/rail seals, valve body and cam cover seals, etc.), head studs, water pump and seals, and timing chain kit.

My question is, can I replace all of that without having the piston heads serviced, or should I send the lower engine block to a machine shop to have the heads looked at and serviced?

you should get the heads surfaced, otherwise all the work could be for nothing

I hope that HHR is worth it

You don't need to send the lower block out if your going to do the cylinder heads. There is no such thing as piston heads.
