When should I change my oil?

Hi Scotty,

i have a 2016 GMC Savana with a V8 auto trannie with 35,000 miles on it. I use it as a RV and only drive it during warm weather. The manufacturer says to change the oil every 5,000 miles and I have been doing that. But there is an Info button on the dash that tells you when to change the oil: I last changed it 5,000 miles ago but the dash info says my oil is still 44% good. Which do I listen to, the manufacturer recommendation or the dash computer info?

The DIC (dash computer) takes into account driving conditions, which is more accurate that mileage alone. For example, the oil will last longer driving on the highway. (Scotty says highway miles are equivalent to 10% city miles). 44% means your oil still has plenty of life in it. I do sort of a compromise and change the oil when the oil life indicator starts to get "low" and it's convenient. (below 25%).

1 year/5,000 miles. Whichever comes first, regardless of what the onboard oil life monitor says.

Annually or 5k miles whichever comes first. The oil life monitor is a "rough" guide, but it's not the end-all-be-all. In my 2019 SS Camaro I only make sure it's been reset when I change my oil. I rarely look at it to tell me when to change the oil. I drive it a little more so I do 5k miles or 6 months. And plan to do the same with our new Corolla as well.

Listen to your owner's manual and change it every 5000 miles. Especially since your owner's manual says so. Oil is cheap, engine is not.
