hello anyone or scotty i recently bought a 2003 ford f150 i has 135000 miles on it for its age i paid 3800 for it and about 2000 worth of repairs into it and still needs more work i understand the car is old and the previous owner did not really maintain it im getting sick of putting money into it already and looking to see if i should keep it or sell i understand i have to take a loss, the body is still in good shape the work it still needs it a alignment, front brake lines, ac still needs to be fixed, needs a new belt and pulleys and tensioner and also looking to get a transmission leak looked at but hopefully looking to get it looked at soon if its going to be expensive then might as well sell it ? Help need some advice hopefully someone thats been or now is in this situation.

This is why it is always important to have a mechanic inspect a used vehicle before you buy it.

IMO, I would sell it. On top of everything else, if it has a transmission leak, who knows how long it has been run on low fluid and what internal damage has been done.

Sorry to hear of your situation though. We have all been there.

How long can you try to polish a turd?  I'd cut my losses and see how much they are getting per ton at the scrap metal dealer.

Its always tough when you are spending money on a vehicle which seems to be almost endless..but on the other hand....you have to calculate how much more you are going to invest into it to make it what you want...provided other things expensive don't occur that have not yet.  Then buying another vehicle has its "ifs" as well...what problems does it have that you know to make it what you want if its used. Will you be trading one set of problems for another set ?  Its not an easy decision...Sometimes it might be better to buy a used vehicle which does not need repair but have low monthly payments.  Some do not want that avenue but it should be considered as long as the monthly payment is affordable and not impact your financial situation.

I got a hand me down vehicle for free and drove it for 4 years.  Dividing the cost out per month, maintaining and repairing that thing was almost a car payment for a cheap car.

It seems that currently, it has so many issues to fix. I agree with Mod_Man. Get rid of the car and for your next purchase, have a mechanic to check the car before putting any serious money down.

On the other hand, the tranny leak may be a minor issue. You can live without the A/C, especially if this is not your daily driver. The other things you mentioned aren't that big of a deal. If I had almost 6K invested, I would at least determine if the tranny had issues before making a final decision.
