Hi
i have a question about oil grade to use in my old car.
its a 96 honda accord with 233k on it.
the recommended oil for my car is 5w30 but my mechanic and part store is telling me to put 15w40 in it since it has high mileage. And i am now really confused.
can anyone please advice me whether i should use the manufacturer manual or my mechanic?
Stick to the factory spec oil, especially on a VTEC motor. I have two VTEC-powered vehicles and would not change oil weight from factory spec, especially at higher mileage.
Is he recommending that in order to reduce oil burning? If that engine has variable valve timing you don't want to use a heavier oil since that will mess with the cam phasers.
He is recommending because it has high mileage and 5w30 will be water for the engine according to him.
Engine is 2.2l 4cyl high performance engine. VTEC with timing belt
VTEC is Honda's variable valve timing system, so it really would be best to stick with the factory specified oil. Scotty has made a point of this on quite a few occasions.
Stick to the manufactures recommendation. To reiterate what others have said, Honda’s VTEC system cleverly uses the motor oil and oil pressure to change cam settings. Make sure to keep within those oil specs as to not mess with the system.
Grade of oil and weight of oil are two completely different things. The header of your question is about grade, but the body of your question is about weight. I'M SO CONFUSED!
