So I have a 2006 Honda civic automatic, when I drive the car for a while I hear a whinning noise from the front of the car. It whines only when I stop, and in all gears. When I pull the latch to open the hood the whinning stops instantly any ideas?
"whining" noises are continuous rotating mechanical noises/sounds. Such noises do not occur because of intermittent physical contact between 1 rotating item and one stationary item, where any sound would be click or knock.
A spectrum analyzer is very helpful in determining the root cause of the whining sound, because it allows the mechanic to eliminate assemblies/components that would not generate the frequencies found. In the great majority of cases our dealership encounters, and in using the appropriate test devices, the root cause and required actions are determined in less than 5 minutes.
Excessively-worn un-lubricated bronze bearings (used in idler pulleys, pumps, alternators, etc.) are a frequent source of whining sounds.
If the frequency of the noise increases with an increase in engine rpm's, the source of the sound should be capable of being localized/determined using any of several localization techniques (good mechanics know them all).
In some instances, a whining noise that increases in frequency with an increase in engine rpm can also be created when excessive preloading is present between two or more components during recent repair/assembly. Over-torqueing can also cause whining.
If the frequency of the noise remains constant with an increase in engine rpm's, seek out noise coming from any component that operates at the same speed whenever running (perhaps electric radiator fans, etc.).
In a few instances, a vehicle owner may be able to correct the problem. But usually, we get angry/frustrated owners bring in vehicles where the owner has spent lots of time and money on "try this, try that" repairs, and the issue remains un-fixed.
Therefore I suggest you take it in to a qualified professional, get it fixed properly, and move on ...
Perhaps the car is afraid of you because when you pull the latch and open the hood The whining stops. Just like children when you threaten them. But if it always stops when you open the hood I would assume it has something to do with the hood itself vibrating or something that's near it vibrating because if it was something like fan belts or anything opening the hood doesn't go do affected at all
Maybe check to see if the fan shroud is contacting the hood when it is closed. It might get smashed down just enough to touch the tip of the fan blades? Only thing I can think of besides the car being scared of you like scotty said haha.
