Wong rev past 4k rpm

Topic starter

I just picked up a 2000 Honda CRV AWD with 220k miles. Trans fluid looks OK doesn't smell burnt and shifts good.

But won't Rev past 4k rims.

There is a decent exhaust leak not sure if that's why also cat might be clogged

But its exactly always at 4k, can't go past. Feels like limp mode.

I can still drive high speeds just trouble on hills.

No engine codes

Engine sounds fine doesn't sound messed up or anything.

Had my friend look at it said, maybe cat clogged, cam or crankshaft sensor or knock sensor.

But I wanted to get yalls opinions on here.

I got this crv for 500$.

I have a whole parts crv too.

Also if trans fluid doesn't smell burnt, and shifts good. I can probably do drain and refill and be OK ya?

That car is nearly 1/4 century old with high mileage so it could have quite a few problems. Also, if it has an automatic transmission it may be set from the factory to shift at no higher than 4000 RPM. (You didn't say if you were selecting gears manually.)

Check for excessive exhaust back pressure, check obvious things like spark plugs, filters, and fuel pressure. Run a complete diagnostic scan and check live data for problems.

Additionally, see the site FAQ.

Aloha I noticed a dent in the oil pan a decent dent. Could this be why it's not going past 4k rpms

No. If the engine were starved for oil as a result it would self-destruct.

Aloha so I got some info to share

Had a mechanic with a big scanner run tests

Says engine is fine and cam sensors are fine.

Yes could be the shift solenoid

Because when I first got it, it would not rev past 4k rpms. Then I found out was 2 quarts overfilled in engije oil. So had to drain it out, then would not shift past 3500 rpms and it accelerated slower. Then guy used his scanner, and ran tests on solenoids
Also found a safety fuse fail thing and cleared it. And now will rev past 4k rpms but not past 5.

So given that whatever h3 did with his scanner allowed my car to then go past 3500 rpms right before 5k mean that it's something electrical like a solenoid

What's the red line on that engine? 5000 rpm is pretty far up there for most consumer-grade engines and automatic transmissions will generally shift well before that point unless you hold gears manually. Does that engine have a rev limiter?

It seems odd that a transmission solenoid problem would affect maximum engine rpm but given how tied together the various modules are on even on a 2000 model I guess it's possible.

Well now isn't going past 4k rpms and 7k is when red line starts

Update was not the trans solenoid

The inside of the distributer tho is rattling and my other crv it's quiet

It's not unusual for a distributor to be worn at that age and mileage.
