1997 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Wagon 4D

230,000 miles

Manual

The owner states, that the car won't stay in 4th gear and recommends a new transmission.

Other than that, it has been well maintained. I have not gone to look at the car yet.

The reason I'm interested is because of my former 1999 Subaru Impreza Sport Wagon 4D; which I'd probably still have if it hadn't been in the middle of some "family dispute" as 78 bullets were fired into my neighborhood. One of the drivers was shot, then as he threw his stolen car into reverse, and smashed mine on the front end. That was it for my car. It almost had 200K miles and ran pretty well.

There are some features in this 1997 model that I'd really like to make use of; however, if it isn't a good idea I won't pursue it.

Here's the Facebook Market link to it.

P.S. Is 4th gear really necessary? When driving my '99, I was always on the freeway when in 4th gear. Couldn't I just get higher RPMs in 3rd and throw it into 5th gear? Or would that not be a good idea?

Thanks Scotty! Really appreciate your advice.

To view the above 1997 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Wagon 4D, search for it on Facebook Market as a 1997 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport Wagon 4D in Gallatin, MO. It is "Subaru Blue" with gold wheels/rims. It was listed 4 weeks ago. The list prices is now $2600, was $2800. Thank you! Unless the car is free I'd steer clear and even then if you can't do the work of installing a replacement transmission plus head gaskets yourself I would still stay away. At 230K miles the engine could well be shot and need to be rebuilt or replaced in the near future.

If 4th gear is bad you can bet that there are metal shavings that have been churning around in there for some time that will ultimately trash the entire transmission. Then of course on a Subaru of that vintage the head gaskets are a concern. Even if the car was free you could well find yourself with a lawn ornament that will require thousands of dollars worth of repairs. I certainly would not pay any money for it.

Thanks for the detailed response. Really appreciate it!
