1997 LS400, 238,000 miles, Automatic Transmission
Hello! Recently, I contacted a mechanic buddy of mine to service my 1997 LS400, and the transmission fluid seemed to be low, so I purchased a quart and added it it. I later did more research and had found out that I had purchased the wrong type of tranmission fluid (Il dumb mistake) , and havent driven it since the servicing. I am not sure what to do, but I was given a few suggestions like flushing, draining, or just driving it like that. I would appreciate it if I could have some other suggestions.
Dexron 2, I added a toyota ATF that would replace Dexron 3.
Dexron 3 is backward-compatible with Dexron 2. So if you used a Toyota fluid that is Dexron 3 compatible there are no concerns.
what does the car take, and what did you put in?

They're close enough and 1 quart isn't going to make a huge difference.
But it raises other questions, like why is it low? ATF doesn't get consumed like engine oil, so you either have a leak or you're not checking the level properly.
Also when is the last time the ATF was drained & filled and the filter replaced?
Sorry I had actually added Dexron 3 and previously had T-IV ATF. It did have a transmission leak, from what I assume was an improper draining job 5k miles ago.
You should be fine.
Thanks!
