| Odyssey Won't Run After Valve Cover Gasket Replacement | 19Relevance | 5 years ago | gkfische | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| HELP! So I followed Eric the Car Guy's video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeddYKKorsY) for doing my front valve cover on my 04 Honda odyssey (278K). I replaced the gasket, cleaned up the intake manifold cover since there was heavy carbon buildup, and reassembled everything. Time-consuming, but no problem. I went to start the engine and it struggled to turnover. It did, but not well. I got it to start once and the engine was not right – it almost sounded as if only half the pistons were firing. I double-checked the ignition coils and connectors to ensure they were on – no issue. What did I do wrong? Where should I be looking for a mistake? Unfortunately, no engine codes were triggered to give me an indication of what it might be. Quick Bump/Additional Info: The Intake Manifold cover on the 04 odyssey also has EGR passages. I was specifically cleaning those out due to the carbon buildup | |||||
| 2001 Honda Odyssey auto transmission issues? | 19Relevance | 5 years ago | desky470 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hi Scotty! I drive a 2001 Honda odyssey with the original automatic transmission. The van has somewhere over 265,000 kilometers on it. I'm not entirely sure of the exact figure because the odometer is digital and just puts out gibberish 95 percent of the time, but 265,000 is what it read last time it decided to work properly. I've been told that the second gen odyssey vans apparently have weak transmissions and they die out all the time and I'm worried about that happening, especially considering the age and mileage of the van. Are there any things to look out for that might let me know if my transmission is about to go out? At the moment it still shifts smoothly and there don't seem to be any issues, except about 20 percent of the time it won't shift into second until I'm up to between 3-4 thousand RPMs. The rest of the drivetrain seems to be mechanically sound, no ticking, no strange noises, no oil burning etc. | |||||

| Hey Scotty. I have a 2003 honda odyssey that I've had and taken care of since 2005. I've heard people complain about having transmission problems especially on this generation of odyssey. It now has 193k miles on it original transmission and still shifts just fine. How does it still run fine when these transmissions have had many instances of problems? Is it running on prayers? | |||||

| I might be a bit biased because my parents have a 2016 odyssey and it runs like a dream. That 2011 odyssey is a lot better than the 2010 and below. Just make sure u have it checked because it does have a lot of mileage. | |||||
| Answer to: 2007 Odyssey timing belt | 19Relevance | 5 years ago | tcm8896 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| When it comes to odyssey timing belts, change them early. Actually, change them earlier than early. My mom's 06 odyssey blew the belt almost exactly on schedule and grenaded both heads, costing her well over $2000 to repair. With an interference engine you really can't be proactive enough about replacing them. | |||||

| I found a Honda odyssey online for $8,000 with 150,000 miles on it. I know you don't like the odyssey, but I would like your opinion. The frame is good and it has not been in a crash. The only problem is that the engine light comes on every 30 minutes. is this a traction control problem? I took it to a mechanic and he said that everything looked fine, and he had the same scanners as you do. IDK what's wrong. Should I buy it? | |||||

| 2014 Honda Odyssey | 19Relevance | 5 years ago | Freddie-R | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I bought a used 2014 odyssey with 70k miles a couple years ago. It ran perfectly until just over 100k the plugs fouled and the engine misfire code came on. The dealer said it needed new piston rings! My old 2004 odyssey went close to 300k miles and never had that problem. About $2,500 to replace the rings at the dealer. They can take out the pistons without pulling the engine. (Pull heads and oil pan.) They also insist on doing the 100k service (new belt, plugs, and water pump... another $1500). If so... big disappointment. In my younger days I would have done this job myself. Have you experienced this with newer V-6 Honda engines (J35Z8-VCM)? | |||||
| Honda Odyssey Brakes | 19Relevance | 5 years ago | hofmeis1@gmail.com | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hi Scotty, love your channel on YouTube. We currently have a 2016 Honda odyssey with about 70K on it. This is our 4th odyssey dating back to 2005. We love Honda. Across multiple generations they have not fixed a big, really well know problem. Severe steering wheel feedback (wobble) when using the brakes. It usually starts before you have 20K on the vehicle. The brakes are still good and actually work just fine. Understanding this was probably because the rotors were getting to hot and warping. So I finally broke down and bought "racing" brakes. Ceramic pads and drilled and slotted rotors, on all wheels. Which worked great for 15-20K miles but now the wobble is back. Thanks, Mike from the Motor City | |||||

| I also would stay away from the odyssey. I worked on a few of these for other people and they don't seem to hold up like other Honda vehicles. One of them randomly started smoking into the passenger compartment at highway speeds with a family inside. The owner called me frantic on the side of the road thinking it was on fire. I could never get the van to reproduce the issue but I checked everything out that I could think of and sent him on his way. It never did it again but that was one of the weirdest calls I have ever received. That particular van had many other issues as well. Other odysseys that I have experience with have transmission issues, automatic sliding door problems, engine overheating, and A/C problems. They seem to pop up on a regular basis with way more issues than any other Honda. If you end up buying the odyssey, I wish you the best of luck and that one has lasted a pretty good while already. Any problems you may have I'm sure can be worked out here. | |||||

| Yes I have and the engine noise does come from the engine they basically don't want to stand behind the wrong products which is typical took them years to recall the bad automatic transmission on the odyssey vans and now they have engine.big reason I tell people never to buy a Honda odyssey van but you have it so keep complaining to them and pray they fix it you have paperwork showing your problems if engine does go out you could always Sue Honda if they refuse to replace it then | |||||

| I’m not as experienced as many of the guys in this forum. But I was able to change the valve cover gasket to my 1999 Honda Accord. And changing the gasket means removing the valve cover! The odyssey is the same platform as the Accord, and I suspect the 2006 model doesn’t stray too far from the previous generation odyssey/Accord. I watched many a video on how to do it. One of Scotty’s videos actually inspired me to take on the challenge. It was my first time peering into an exposed area of the engine, and I was in awe. You got this. | |||||

| The 2011 odyssey model year in trim levels, LX, EX, EX-L used the 5-speed automatic transmission that wasn't prone to problems. The Touring and Touring Elite trim levels used the 6-speed automatic, which I would be leery of because when all of the odysseys went to 6-speed automatics in 2014, they started having widespread transmission problems being reported. I don't know if it's the same 6-speed they used in the 2011-2013 Touring/Touring Elites. You might want to research that further if your looking at a 2011 odyssey,Touring trim level. Also there were some NHTSA recalls but nothing major and nothing to do with the power train or running gear. Look at those. Otherwise, if it checks out good and you're comfortable with the price it should be a decent vehicle | |||||
