| Answer to: 2015 Mazda 6 Timing Chain replacement or not? | 24Relevance | 5 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Your mechanic is correct. Unlike rubber timing belts, timing chains get noisy before they fail. Even then it's frequently just the tensioner. Change your oil regularly and you won't have a problem, though I'd go with 5000-6000 mile intervals - 8000 is pushing it. (I have way more mileage on the original timing chain in my own vehicle and it's still nice and quiet.) | |||||

| Realize that is an endless money pit machine that I personally would not throw that kind of money into.but any good mechanic can hook up a timing light and do a timing test and listen to it and tell you if the timing chain is indeed worn but if it is you better off getting rid of the car | |||||
| Answer to: 2013 VW Jetta change out Timing Belt? | 24Relevance | 4 years ago | Doc | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Change the belt, tensioner and idler pulley and the water pump at the same time. timing belts do not last forever. You are probably referring to the serpentine belt, since your vehicle has a timing chain. Diesel - 1.4L, 2.0L - timing belt Gas - 1.8L, 2.0L, 2.5L - timing chain. Next time you need a question answered, please provide the engine and transmission information as requested in the first paragraph. | |||||

| I see these cars have a chain; I was misled by the 'bmw change interval'. Sorry for that. Strange, they advise a replacement interval, as a chain is supposed to last a car's life | |||||
| Ticking noise after Timing Chain Tensioner Replacement | 24Relevance | 4 years ago | Miles Glide | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hello Scotty and community, I have a 2005 Mazda MPV 3.0 v6 (Duratec 30) Automatic with 200K miles.I replaced the timing cover gaskets as well as the timing chain tensioners. now when I turn the engine over by hand it makes a clunk - clunk noise.I checked the timing as the service manual says, and the marks on the gears match up (as far as I can tell). I also checked the combustion chambers with a bore scope, and I didn't see any contact of valves with the pistons for all 6 cylinders. Here is an audio recording of me turning the engine over by hand (with t ... | |||||
| Answer to: GM, Holden ve commodore SV6 thoughts/opinions/help | 24Relevance | 4 years ago | jeremy213 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hey thank's for the reply scott, ve commodores having an alloytec, It's governed by the PCM via the CRANK ANGLE SENSOR which reads directly off the crank, So timing chain wear will only affect cam timing and not ignition timing in GM alloytecs sadly! plus these ecu use spark to also control idle so timing can be moving around a bit just normally, idle isnt a steady state as its been controlled at that rpm, soon as u go to a higher rpm its also loaded up more so the timing will be more consistent, it also jumps out of the idle timing table into the main spark table, timing uses airmass and has hundreds of cells with values in them based on the load of the engine v rpm | |||||
| 2011 Buick p0011 intermittent rough idle/stalling | 23Relevance | 2 years ago | Mars2011 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| ... there was a very noticeable increase in the sensitivity of the gas pedal and the car would jump (accelerate) randomly when slowing down. The day after the oil change, I had a random engine cut off while turning onto a parking lot. The engine was not shaky or running rough at this time and I didnt know the engine was dead initially. The car would start back up instantly, but would die when put in drive. After trying a couple times, the car started and ran perfectly fine straight home. I used my code reader and came up with p0016 and p0011. I spent a ridicul ... | |||||
| Answer to: Timing chain a couple links loose?? | 23Relevance | 5 years ago | Getrdone | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I'm not sure about how your engine is set up but many engines use a hydraulic chain tensioner that runs of engine oil pressure. If the engine is not running there will be no oil pressure to engage the tensioner and you can get a small amount of slack in the chain. If your not hearing any chain rattle when you give it a few brief revvs in neutral I'd say your ok. | |||||
| Answer to: clicking noise when I turn on the ignition | 23Relevance | 3 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| If you have timing chain slap the only "product" that would fix it would be to replace the worn out component(s). It could be the tensioner, chain guides, the chain itself or any combination of those. | |||||
| Answer to: 2014 Corolla CEL | 23Relevance | 5 years ago | Doc | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I am confused. The Corolla has a timing chain, not a timing belt. If the timing chain cover is leaking and the gaskets need replacing, it's probably a good idea to change the chain, tensioners and guides while they are in there. Did they mention this to you? That would account for the $1900. I would suggest you take the car to an independent mechanic and avoid the dealer if possible. They are just not giving you a full explanation. Have someone else confirm this so called timing cover "leak." | |||||
| Answer to: Corolla timing cover and chain replacement! | 23Relevance | 2 years ago | Joeo | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| No, I don't think there's any indication of it. It runs fine and there's no excessive noise (chain flap). They said they may as well do it while replacing the timing cover due to the work it takes to replace it as they have to almost remove the engine to do it. I know Scotty has several 1.8 L. I've never heard much about timing cover replacement and it's difficulty to do so. Thanks. | |||||

| Hyundai Santa Fe 2014 Limited 3.3L 6V 110K miles, automatic, code P-0018 (bank 2, sensor A) I took to a shop due to engine check came on. Shop told me that changing a tensioner and chain "might" fix the code. I already replaced the crankshaft position sensor. Is this likely the issue or just another sensor going bad? The car seems to run like it normally does. Car always seemed underpowered and the only owner. Where can I find a video or resource to get to access the chain? I paid for a repair manual (https://manual4you.com/a/downloads/-/461d9635bbf04108/1 ... | |||||
| Answer to: Toyota Avensis 2016 with BMW motor – should I get rid of it as soon as possible? | 23Relevance | 4 years ago | Dan | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Well, personally I'm not a fan of BMW's N47 - it's definitely not the best engine out there. As @Kaizen said, these are notorious for issues with their timing chain. mainly because the costs to replace the chain on these can get insane. Looking online people also claim it has issues with the harmonic balancer and intake getting gunk built up inside of it - those aren't "major" issues as I see it. The N47 usually does NOT fall apart, they just require a very annoying and costly chain replacement from time to time (I hear people claim it can be even before ... | |||||
| Answer to: 2010 Equinox has a clogged front catalytic converter | 23Relevance | 3 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Do you mean the timing chain? What was this diagnosis based on? Do you get a rattling noise when starting up the engine cold? Does your Equinox have the 4 cylinder or V6 engine? It looks like there was a service campaign and warranty extension for the timing chain on 4 cylinder models, but unfortunately that has expired. | |||||
| Answer to: 2011 Nissan Frontier *ENGINE KNOCKING NOISE* | 23Relevance | 4 years ago | Nathaniel J. | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I have a 2011 Nissan Frontier 5spd w/od auto 4x4 147K miles. Here’s a link I posted on another post (2011 Nissan Frontier Negative Ignition timing) though I appreciate all of your help! I figured out I was looking at the wrong data, for worn timing chain. My ignition advance is 15 degrees. Which normally is supposed to be between 5-20 degrees. So my timing chain is healthy, if it wasn’t the ignition advance would be off, which it isn’t. So now the real problem is, what is this noise now, if it’s not the timing chain hitting the side of the guard. I have been proposed one of two ideas. Noisy injectors or Valve Clatter. Though let me provide you this information, my fathers NEW Audi (even though they are over engineered) makes the same ticking noise. ALSO my step mothers Acura w/ 30K miles has the same noise too. The only difference between my truck and their cars is both of theirs are GDI’s and mine is old school PFI. And I know GDI’s are known for their noisy ticking engines. So I wanted to ask y’all what y’all think about with this link I will provide y’all. | |||||
