| ... out the window because the turbocharger is operating. Turbochargers force more air into the engine's cylinders than is possible with a naturally aspirated engine. Increased air must be accompanied with more gas to maintain the same fuel/ air ratios. Gas mileage is also EPA-estimated, not based on hard facts; I once got 23 MPG going 55 MPH on the highway in my old Ford ranger 4x4 during the most recent fuel crisis; that's compared to EPA estimated highway mileage of 17 MPG. it has a 4:10:1 rear end, and the 2WD model uses either a 3.08:1 rear end, a 3.53:1 r ... | |||||

| ... and a lot of frustration later, they seem to have fixed it. The 3.0L Vulcan V6 is a basic pushrod engine from the mid 80s, it has none of today's fancy variable vamlve timing and such. It's a cast iron dinosaur, so theoretically, it would be easier to take apart, but you never know how well it was done. Electronic fuel injection was its big advance. It's a pretty well made engine on Ford's part from my gathering and experience. A friend of mine had well over 400k mi on his ranger with a 3.0 and 5 speed. When he finally sold it, the thing still drove dow ... | |||||
| ALDL not working | 17Relevance | 6 years ago | Texasron | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| 2005 Ford ranger Edge 2wd, 3.0, stick shift, 67,400 miles. I purchased one of the Autel OBD2 testers that Scotty reviewed as my check engine light just came on. The device does not light up. I tried it on my wife's Chevy Trax and it works on that vehicle. How do I diagnose the problem with my ranger's ALDL port? I did get the check engine light to turn off by removing the negative cable for a few minutes and reconnecting it. Note that the ranger has always been in the deserts of Utah and Arizona so absolutely no corrosion problems. All 4 O2 sensors w ... | |||||

| I like the 3.0L engine. I have one of those in my 2001 ranger. I've also owned a 1999 Taurus with a 3.0L engine. I don't like that they have zero tolerance for overheating even for a short time. I think I spend more time glancing down at my temp gauge than my speedometer on my ranger. (I really like my 2001 ranger and I don't want anything stupid to happen to it) | |||||
| Answer to: Canyon vs Tacoma vs Frontier vs Ranger | 17Relevance | 4 years ago | USAFdozerpilot | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Well you can honestly get close to Tacoma quality without the Toyota price tag with the Frontier. Obviously Toyota is the better pick and will hold value. IF you were choosing between the Ford or GM I’m sticking with the ranger. Why? Because although Ford and GM both seem to like dropping the ball on quality control, Ford made the smart move and decided to completely focus on trucks. GM hasn’t done that, they wanted to get their hands in everything to try and please everyone and and that choice has been their demise. So, as I said before yes both companies l ... | |||||
| 1991 Ford Ranger 3.0 inline 6 spark plug replacement | 16Relevance | 2 years ago | Rainbox64 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hello Everyone, I'm working on my Grandfather's 1991 Ford ranger 3.0 inline 6. I'm doing a tune up and I was replacing the spark plugs. So far, I've been able to replace 5/6 of the plugs with no issues. However, I am having great difficulty replacing the far back left spark plug. I can touch it and grab it, but I cannot get enough leverage to pull the spark plug cable off to get to the plug. In all of Ford's genius, they put it right next to the AC system. Any recommendations on how to get this off? I've looked up tons of YouTube videos and cannot find a ... | |||||
| Trading in my 07 Ranger for a 19-21 F250 | 23Relevance | 5 years ago | James St. Clair | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I was thinking of trading in my 2007 Ford ranger for a 19-21 F250 diesel supercab short bed, 4x4, remote start, aluminum rims, probably XLT or next up trim level, spray in bed liner, rear sliding window. ...And possibly a snow plow. I’m wondering if it’s an ok move or not. My ranger is in great shape, but I’ve always wanted a diesel and remote start and a bigger truck. How much should I get for my ranger? It’s in great condition. Redfire metallic with tan interior. Electric shift 4x4, 4.0, manual transmission, long bed/regular cab, XLT, 4.10 gears with L ... | |||||
| Answer to: 2011 Ford Ranger | 23Relevance | 5 years ago | Justin Shepherd | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| That was pretty much the end of the run for the venerable ranger, so most any mechanical problems they had were fixed. That year is related to my 1999 ranger, though they discontinued a few engine options. They ended the Vulcan V6 in 2008, which is the engine my ranger has, with 268,000 miles on it. That engine, along with the 2.5L 4 cylinder have the highest longevity. If it's an automatic, the weak point will be the automatic transmission, typical for American vehicles. It has a 5R44E, which is basically the same as my '99's 4R44E, only it was reprogrammed to add a new 3rd gear, between my 2nd and 3rd gear. Its 5th gear is my overdrive 4th gear. The internals were made stronger as well. The guts of that transmission go back before electronic controls were added in the mid 90s. It is not a weak transmission, providing it was maintained, but have it checked out by a mechanic anyways. I had mine rebuilt shortly after I bought it at 249k miles, it had all original seals and fluid. Check the frame for rust, particularly the rear half if you're in a rust prone area. The whole front half of my truck has next to no frame rust, but the rear frame started rotting at the shock mounts. A friend, some quarter inch plate steel and a welder fixed that. | |||||
| Answer to: which model year from (2017-2020) of the automatic transmission ford ranger should I buy? | 21Relevance | 3 years ago | Kaizen | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| ... it comes in the preferred transmission. Scotty isn’t too fond of the EcoBoost petrol engines. The 10 speed transmission is a Ford and GM product. And I tend to avoid most GM products for reliability concerns. The 6 speed is built by Ford under license from ZF. Which has mostly good transmissions. And that 6 speed has been around forever. (Avoid the ZF 9 speed in any make or model.) This is all based on the spec sheets, so take it for what it is worth. | |||||
| Should I swap power steering pump on 2002 Ford Ranger? | 21Relevance | 4 years ago | Jordan614 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I've got a 2002 Ford ranger 3.0 Automatic RWD with 216.7k miles and there's a good bit of slop in the power rack and pinion (all one solid unit). Already sourced replacement rack and pinion (Phoenix Rack and Axle), and Moog tie rod ends. Thinking of swapping power steering pump, as I bought it at ~185k miles and there was no prior maintenance record. Should I swap it along with the hoses, and if so, is it okay to buy a remanufactured one claiming a lifetime warranty? | |||||

| Hey Scotty, I know the new Ford rangers have only been out for a few years, but do you think they will have the same reliability that Ford has with the f150? With the used car prices the way they are I just ended up buying a 2021 ranger. I keep my cars for a long time so I’m hoping it stands the test of time. | |||||

| Hi Scotty! My co-worker is selling is 2010 Ford ranger 4x4 V6 with an automatic transmission. It has 132,000 km (I'm in Alberta, Canada) and I know many of them are highway kilometers because he drives on the highway to get to work. The Ford dealership said they would give him a trade-in value of $11,000, but my co-worker says he would sell it to me instead if I match their price. Is this too much to pay for this vehicle? Thanks! | |||||

Have you seen any 2019 and up model rangers having the carbon build up problems with the 2.3 eco boost? and how can i stay on top of maintenance in every department to keep my truck lasting and running good for a long time. | |||||
