Hey Scotty,
I know the new Ford rangers have only been out for a few years, but do you think they will have the same reliability that Ford has with the f150? With the used car prices the way they are I just ended up buying a 2021 ranger. I keep my cars for a long time so I’m hoping it stands the test of time.
Brand new I could not recommend neither the Ranger nor the F-150 because of their problematic engines.
Huh I’ve looked at a lot of trucks, I haven’t seen anything about trouble with Ford truck engines. Other than the old f250 diesels.
@lesterparker the 2.3 eco early on had head gasket issues but to my knowledge that’s all a thing of the past now.
Not all of the F-150 engines were bad.
For the F-150: the tiny twin turbo ecoboost engines and 5.0 V8 were troublesome (the former is just weak because its a tiny ecoboost engine and the later is prone to oil consumption and engine failure). To get a better answer, what engine were you considering on the Ranger?
Unfortunately they are only available with the Ecoboost engine.
The average life of a well-built turbo, driven in average conditions by your average driver, is around 130k - 150k miles. I'm just talking factory turbos here, not high performance turbos which we all know have a shorter life span.
That being said, the turbo isn't the only issue with getting an EcoBoost to 200k miles. The engine internals themselves get extra stress from all the extra pressure caused by the turbo. So when the turbo goes out, it is likely not.long after that the motor will need a rebuild.
That said, the Ranger is a good looking truck. My experience with my 2018 F150 does not allow me to consider buying another Ford ever, but I can see why someone would buy a Ranger. I hope it lasts you a long time and treats you good. They are still too new to really judge long term longevity. Maybe if you get it to 200k miles you can tell us how it went. {black}
@Mod_Man It seems like you have a lot of vehicles in your fleet lol.
I have too many my friend. It's an addiction. Lol.
The 2.3 Ecoboost is not a long term motor. It’s small, GDI and turbocharged. That’s a lot of plumbing for a small motor. Also, it’s only got a 18 gallon fuel tank. Other than that it seems like a decent truck.
Yea I was a little worried about the turbo. I haven’t heard of too many problems from Ford turbos though. I don’t drive like a crazy person at all. I baby my truck. Hopefully I can get a good 200k before the turbo poops the bed.
@lesterparker 200k is the hope, if you drive conservatively you’ll probably get more around 150k is what I’m seeing on forums and talking to my coworkers who drive ecoboosts, but you never know, a buddy of mine in Alaska had a 3.5 eco and his original turbo went to 185k mi before it went 🤷♂️. I really don’t think they are terrible trucks. I don’t like having only a 18 gal fuel tank and I’m not huge on the 10 speed trans yet I believe it’s got promise but definitely needs some tweaks to it.
@lesterparker also, I know Ford says that ranger can tow up to 7500 lbs but I would never think to tow that amount for a long haul or consistently in that truck.
The problem with small engines and turbos is if you baby them, them gum up and fail, and if you get after it, they burn up. I would never buy anything Ecoboost, Ford or otherwise.
I figure if I can get 150k out of the turbo, if it goes out I’ll throw another one in. I won’t be too upset in 10 yrs if it needs a new one. If it goes under 100k it’s under warranty from the dealership.
For longevity, just like Scotty, I am not a fan of the Ecoboost engines in those as they can wear out as well as the 10-speed automatic transmission: jury is out on the long-term reliability of the 10-speed. Just be sure to stay on top of the engine oil and transmission fluid changes, even more aggressive than Ford recommends.
I would never buy a Ford product unless it's heavy duty and it's not a 10 speed auto. The 10 speed automatic is a new transmission so we will not know the exact reliability of it for a few years. Take care of it very good.
I hope this truck serves you well for years to come, but I wouldn't keep it beyond the 6-8 year / 70 - 80 thousand miles mark because after that the EcoBoost engines tend to fall apart.
I always take good care of my vehicles. Sure do hope it lasts longer than 6-8 years. I don’t mind fixing little things here and there if I have to.
they look good!
which engine does it have?
All new rangers come with the eco boost 4 cylinder. It’s a zippy little truck.
i have seen a few around, but not up close, hope it give you years of great service
They are pretty small trucks on the interior, not much bigger than a corolla. I much prefer the f150 to the ranger because of the panoramic sunroof and the huge, comfortable cabin. But the rangers are still nice little trucks nevertheless.
@end To me, it's more of a basic truck.
