| @ivanhooThe problem mentioned was not with a rubber timing belt but with a metal timing chain. Apparently, a common problem: | |||||
| Answer to: 2010 Corolla Rattling noise at Cold start | 27Relevance | 4 years ago | Doc | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Your Corolla has a timing chain, not a timing belt. The symptoms you describe are the classic signs that the timing chain system is failing. If you let it go, it will destroy your engine. The timing chain kit (chain, tensioner, guides, etc.) needs to be replaced. This is a fairly complicated job and expensive, but not near as expensive as a new engine. | |||||
| Answer to: Should I replace my water pump | 27Relevance | 4 years ago | Kaizen | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| I agree with @mmj. If you needed to replace the timing chain or timing belt, then go ahead and replace it. It takes like two more seconds on a few our job. But if your are just replacing the serpentine belt, don’t even bother. You’d be spending more time removing stuff to access the timing chain or timing belt belt, then just changing out the serpentine belt. | |||||

| Answer to: Cost to fix cold start rattle caused by timing chain tensioner? | 30Relevance | 6 months ago | MountainManJoe | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| without xray vision, you won't know until it gets opened up. That would be the starting cost. The dealership will always cost more. Their rates are higher, and they don't repair anything, only replace. Depends on your budget use a trustworthy shop, ideally one you know through word of mouth. Check their reviews. Make sure all labour and parts are warrantied. It's always a possibility. That's just how car repair works. There's no magic crystal ball that tells you what the condition inside the engine is. | |||||

| My son owns a 2011 Ford Focus SE 2.0 with 96K miles. As you probably know, it has a timing chain. I believe it is the same engine in a Mazda. One mechanic tells me that it never needs to be replaced, which I doubt. I just watched a video where some mechanic with a very german accent tells me that I must replace it with no more than 100K miles, or count on trashing the engine. He says the chain and sprockets are too thin, and the tensioner spring gets weak causing a host of problems. He also says that all the main bolts must be replaced with new or they will ... | |||||

| Maybe. Maybe you should get a second opinion. How much? Rebuilding an engine takes days to do properly. The cost would very quickly surpass the value of your vehicle. (nobody does this except hobbyists) | |||||

| ... start with no unusual noises. I got the car towed home and attempted troubleshooting. Code scanner threw up a *pending* P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor circuit A. The data showed about 40 psi fuel. I could hear the fuel pump startup, but also checked and reset the inertia switch. I threw some parts at it - camshaft and crankshaft position sensors - though the old ones tested well. I gave up and got it to a (not my regular)shop. They came back with compression problems. 3 cylinders with 0, 2 with 140, and 1 with 70. They declared the engine wrecked and ne ... | |||||

| Hi I have a BMW F34 2015, N20 engine, with 95K miles. Manufactured 02/15. I currently have a valve cover gasket that needs to be replaced due to leaking. Other than that, the car runs great and has no symptoms of an issue with the timing chain. Question: since the timing chain has a history of going bad and causing major issues, should I go ahead and replace it as preventative? Since the valve cover gasket needs replacing anyways, a major portion of the tear down is already being done. Should I get 2 birds with one stone? Knowing it’s a major repair and majo ... | |||||
| Answer to: Honda odessey needs new struts | 29Relevance | 4 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| ... along with the tensioner and water pump assuming it's never been changed before. Honda V6 engines use timing belts. You didn't state the year of your Odyssey but spot-checking 2005, 2010, and 2015 models they all have 3.5 liter V6 engines with timing belts. That's an interference engine, so if the timing belt breaks it will destroy the engine and as I said it is currently overdue for replacement if original. I would shop around for a better price on replacement, preferably at an independent mechanic - not a dealer or chain shop. Leave the struts for later ... | |||||
| Answer to: Hyundai Kia engine timing belts chains and interference | 29Relevance | 4 years ago | Dan | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hyundai Accent 1.6L engines are all interference engines. I’ve done some research on the subject and here’s what I found: If your car has an Alpha II engine, and you want the car to last - replace the timing belt according to the maintenance requirements presented in the owners manual. If your car has a Gamma I engine, they had a weak-ish chain that wasn’t good nor bad. Altbough I wouldn’t worry about it that’s much - I still recommending keeping an eye out for it, If the chain starts showing signs of wear, and you want the car to last - replace it. If y ... | |||||
