| Thank you. corroded core plugs? If it is the head gasket, would replacing the coolant in the overflow every 700 miles or so be ok, or am I just delaying the inevitable? FYI, THE mechanic did Try the Blue Devil, but since that was done,,,,the radiator was then replaced (it had cracks) now thinking the radiator was the problem,,,,but no, still loosing coolant like I said above (after 700 miles),,,,,,,,,,,,,would prefer to keep the car without spending 2-3k. Basically can I milk this situation by keeping the coolant level in the radiator and reservoir full, ... | |||||

| The coolant is either leaking somewhere or burning in the engine. There are no other choices. There are no "codes" for coolant loss. No, at least not if you want to keep the vehicle as long as possible. Those "sealers" are pretty much snake oil and just temporary if they work at all. They can also plug up your cooling system and cause more problems. They don't really "fix" anything. The only way to fix a blown head gasket is to replace it. That thing is 21 years old. You can bet there are deteriorated rubber hoses, possibly even corroded core plugs. Pressure test and/or use UV dye to find any leaks. If none are found test for a head gasket leak. | |||||

| Scotty recommends AT-205 Reseal. Be sure to read the box. It's also not guaranteed to work. It swells old, but intact seals. I have an old '79 Pontiac. AT-205 caused my transmission to leak considerably less, but it still leaks. The best thing to do is replace the leaky rear main. Anything else is just a band-aid. | |||||
| Answer to: Subaru Legacy 2009 2.5 Water in the engine Oil | 16Relevance | 3 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| It's almost certain that you have blown head gaskets, but a cracked cylinder head is also a possibility. There's really nowhere else coolant would be getting into the oil. I don't believe the water pump on that engine would mix coolant and oil upon failure. Although driven by the timing belt it is outside the oil-bathed parts of the engine. (If the water pump seizes it would probably snap the timing belt.) Water in the coolant is very destructive, particularly to engine bearings. If you've been driving it this way for any length of time the engine is probably going to be a lost cause. "Blue Devil" and similar products are snake oil. They might work temporarily, might not work at all, and may plug up your cooling system. If you want to give a product like that a try as a last resort Scotty has recommended the Bar's Leak head gasket sealer in the silver bottle. Chances are it's time to start looking for a replacement vehicle. | |||||

| Can I safely use head gasket sealer in my very high mileage 2008 Sequoia? | 16Relevance | 4 years ago | Cokezero23 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hey Scotty, I have a 08 sequoia that may have a blown head gasket, the repair would cost more than the car is worth so I'm thinking of using head gasket sealer like steelseal or Blue Devil. My question is can doing so possibly harm the engine like clogging up the radiator hoses? | |||||
| Answer to: 2002 Camry Head Gasket Leak | 16Relevance | 4 years ago | Justin Shepherd | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Get it fixed the right way. The Blue Devil may have failed because the head gasket isn't the only problem. The head could be warped or the block could have some sort of defect/ be cracked from overheating. Those products really only work if there's hairline cracks, something where the sodium silicate crystals can easily build up and plug the leak. It's unlikely to fill large cracks or gaps, like you may have with a warped head. The new seal can also suddenly give out under load and you'll be back to square one, if not worse off than before. | |||||

| I know that Scotty prefers the Bar's Leak product for that kind of temporary fix, but chances are it would not have worked any differently than the Blue Devil. You might try to find an independent mechanic for a better price on a proper repair, but it's still going to be expensive (maybe half the dealer price) no matter how you look at it. Probably not worth it given the car's age unless it is in unusually good condition otherwise. | |||||

| ... because the gauge on the dashboard didn't go over the half way mark between cold and hot...also we didn't smell anything burning or visually see any smoke coming from under the hood. We experienced a loss of power and what feels sort of like a hesitation when accelerating. Then we started noticing the lightning bolt light intermittently going on and off. Shortly after that is when it went to crap..the car shut off and locked up while we were driving. We then had a friend look at it and he replaced the alternator which was not charging the battery, according ... | |||||

| "Blue Devil" like any sealer is at best a temporary band-aid and may not work at all. I don't know what kind of "experts" they have at that stealership but if they told you that was a long-term fix they were either lying or imbeciles. Without a doubt your head gasket problem was never fixed in the first place and it's back now. | |||||
