| Yes you can use premium gas, but unless the car's engine control system is designed to take advantage of the higher octane it's a waste of money. | |||||

| Answer to: Premium gas | 18Relevance | 5 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| The ability to reduce engine power to adapt to different octane ratings has been around a real long time. As Scotty says the engine management system will detect the onset of detonation and dial ignition timing etc. back to compensate. My car is 24 years old and does it - makes the most power with premium gas but it won't complain if you put regular in it, just makes less power. | |||||

| Is Premium gasoline required? | 18Relevance | 2 years ago | BradG | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Hi Scotty, I recently purchased a used (6 month old) GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate pickup with 3000 miles. I got a great deal and because it is a GM Certified used vehicle I got an additional year’s warranty, so in effect I have a 3 1/2 year warranty when a new truck only has a 3 year warranty. The truck has a 6.2l V8 gasoline engine and the manual says it requires premium (91 octane) fuel. My understanding is that this is due to the high compression. What are your thoughts? Does it really need premium fuel? Thank you, Brad | |||||

| ... you fill up. It's also made to put in with your oil in the crank case and your powersteering pump and it's even ok to mix in with your automatic transmission fluid in any automatic transmission.I quit using 2 cycle oil in my big sthil chainsaw I just mix my premium 93 octain gas with 20% more marvel mystery oil than the recommended amount of 2-cycle oil in with the gas and it runs beautifully. I put it in my boat to I almost forgot. Lol! I put it in everything that has a engine! | |||||
| Answer to: Which octane fuel should I use in my 2020 Subaru WRX? | 18Relevance | 5 years ago | Justin Shepherd | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Your owner's manual will tell you what octane rated fuel to put in the car. It will most likely run fine on 89 or 87. You probably won't be able to race around like WRX guys do because you'll lose some power. Regular and Midgrade don't take high compression like premium very well, and will cause the engine to compensate for pre-ignition. Your owner's manual is the first place to look for this information. gas in the U.S. is pretty much gas. Cheapo brands like UDF, etc. aren't Top Tier fuel like Shell, but they have the federal minimum standard for fuel d ... | |||||

| Check again. I think it says "recommended for better performance", not "required". How to search Scotty's videos No. Just like Scotty always says ... It's perfectly fine to use 87. You just lose a few horsepower and tiny bit of fuel economy. The manual pretty much hints at this too ... | |||||
| Answer to: lexus premium fuel - is it really needed | 18Relevance | 2 years ago | AutoDIY | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Out of curiosity, I googled the manual for your vehicle: "You must only use unleaded gasoline in your vehicle. Select premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 (Research Octane Number 96) or higher required for optimum engine performance. If 91 octane cannot be obtained, you may use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating as low as 87 (Research Octane Number 91). Use of unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than 91 may result in engine knocking and significantly reduced performance. Persistent knocking can lead to engine damage and shoul ... | |||||

| Hi Scotty, been watching you for a long time. Also toyota guy forever. Wondering something. Wife wanted a 2 door awd car so picked up a 2015 lexus rc 350 Thought it was basically the same as our camry 3.5 but says to use premium fuel. Do you know if you actually have to use premium. I dont see any reason they say you have to other than the L on the front. If you could let me know your thoughts it would be great. thanks Chris | |||||

| Like @chucktobias said, it is best to use the fuel octane rating stated in the owners manual. With that said, I have a sneaking suspicion that the way Lexus and Toyota get more HP from essentially the same engine is through fuel. I mean, it kinda make sense, because the more premium and performance brands like BMW require higher octane fuel. My biggest concern with going back and forth between regular and premium is how much damage will the engine receive. The knock sensor can help adjust to the fuel octane rating, at the same time, knock isn’t good for ... | |||||
| Answer to: 87 or premium? | 18Relevance | 3 years ago | Nissanrob88 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| If it says use premium use only premium. If it said regular then it's a waste to use anything higher. Manufacturers don't spend millions in research just for fun. The fuel they recommended is the fuel that gives best performance ect ect. Using to low of a octane can cause pinging, poor mph, rough idle, stalling and even engine damage. | |||||

| read it again. it says: premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 (Research Octane Number 96) or higher required for optimum engine performance In other words , you lose a few horsepower, which is exactly what Scotty always says. Further along in the manual ... If premium gasoline is not available If 91 rating gasoline cannot be obtained, you may use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating as low as 87 (Research Octane Rating 91). You'll be fine. Just watch for knocking. | |||||
