| Answer to: Battery Life and Water | 44Relevance | 1 year ago | Oskool | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| Anything under 10V while cranking is a battery ready to fail and leave you stranded in my opinion. It's also probably wearing out the alternator due to excessive charging of a weak battery. If I get 5 years out of a car battery I'm satisfied. I had a battery go 8 years and then suddenly die. Luckily I was at home when it happened. I waited too long to replace it because I didn't know how to test batteries at the time. I read up on AGM batteries to learn about them. They're mostly used in stop/start cars that turn the engine on/off automatically. They can survive more charge cycles than regular batteries and also charge faster. Although I read they have a similar service life of around 5 years. AGM batteries are damaged by voltages above 15V but can handle higher charge currents of 20 or 30 amps. Flooded batteries are the opposite. They can handle higher voltages of 15V to 17V but a current over 10 amps will start damaging the battery. I read a 20 amp charge will start damaging a flooded battery after 20 minutes. 14.5V seems to be the sweet spot for a battery charger that can charge both AGM and flooded batteries. For flooded batteries lower the current to 10 amps and for AGM turn it to 20 or 30 amps if you like. When the battery charger's amp gauge shows the battery is only drawing 1 or 2 amps, the battery is fully charger so turn the charger off. I leaned the difference between float charging and trickle charging as well. A float charger applies a constant 13 volts and 200mA, for example, to maintain a fully charged battery. The charger never shuts off. Trickle chargers monitor the voltage of a battery and when it drops below a certain voltage, 12.6V for example, the charger automatically turns on and charges the battery back up 13V then shuts off again. | |||||
| Answer to: Can I charge my battery while it's still hooked up | 44Relevance | 3 years ago | Chuck Tobias | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| What @mmj said, but I would add that if you have a modern vehicle with computers it is probably best to only do this with a modern type battery charger that provides clean power. If you have an old-school brute-force charger that consists of little more circuitry than a transformer and selenium rectifier the output is pretty dirty (not filtered at all, it's choppy DC) and you probably would not want that feeding into a modern car's computer modules. (I have a couple of chargers like that from the 1970s.) | |||||

| The only unique (not necessary good) thing about the dodge charger is it's being a 4 door performance car. Now, here come the uglies. It is ugly AF. It falls apart faster than water falling down Niagara Falls. The used ones only have value in the eyes of stupid people. If you asked, I'd gladly receive a free Corolla than a free charger... | |||||

| Hey Scotty, my grandpa is think about getting a new dodge charger or a used one with less then 20,000 miles. He is aware it’s not the best but drives very conservatively and will baby the car and always change oil, etc. He’s 85 and wants a big car for under 25,000 and 4 years and younger & the charger fits him. Are there any other cars that would be better for him? Thanks Scotty and have a nice day! | |||||

| I hear you. The V8 charger looks nice and sounds nice but dependability and reliability aren't traits that jump out when I hear "Dodge charger". They're probably average at best. The V8 engines generally get dogged in those cars. If your in for a hot charger purchase make sure and have a mechanic give it a thorough inspection. It's service history and mileage should be verified. The style and overall appearance are nice but it's the Hemi engine that is the cars soul. This site shows which years you might find wise to avoid. | |||||
