Rough shifting

Hi, My friend has a 2007 Ram 1500 with 92k miles auto 5 speed 5.7l Hemi. It had an issue last week where it wouldn't shift into 4th gear. Now we replaced the Shift Solenoid and added fluid and such but it now shifts rough into 4th and 5th. it has 2 codes, P0734/P0735. The starter and alternator have been replaced within the year. Any idea what the problem could be?

PS, When changing the transmission fluid, it smelled a bit burned and did have plenty of metal flakes but not as much as a CVT. Also, he can only shift into 4th and 5th gear when driving gentle and even then, it shifted rough.

Those codes refer to the same problem with 2 different gears. If it's not dirty or low fluid, or a faulty shift solenoid, the problem is likely due to internal transmission failure.

Ok, when you put it like that, seems you are right. Think it would be better to fully replace the transmission or rebuild the current one?

Scotty has always said the best transmission replacement is a factory rebuilt unit with a warranty. You should have your current transmission diagnosed by an expert before condemning it, however. We can't tell for certain what's going on with it from the internet, though metal flakes and burnt fluid are a very bad sign. (Also the price of replacement may well be more than the truck is worth.)

Sorry I didn’t see your reply sooner, thanks for some help. Not sure what my friend will do but appreciate you helping me get pointed in the right direction. Have a great day and thanks again!
