Scotty,
Before I started watching your videos, I bought a new 2019 Honda Accord with the 1.5 liter turbo engine.
It now has 33,000 miles, we like the car, but do you think that it will be problematic as it gets older ?
Should we trade it in on something that is not gdi or turbocharged ? If so what would you recommend ?
If you are going to keep the car as long as possible, try to get something that comes only with naturally aspirated engine or baby this one.
A normally aspirated Toyota would certainly last longer. However if you use GF-6 rated oil changed at no more than 5000 miles and don't beat the car to death that Honda will likely last for quite a while.
It’s getting so hard to find naturally aspirated engines these days.
You have the Honda L Engine, Specifically the L15BE or L15BG, iirc. I recommend looking into the history of that specific engine, to see how resilient it is or not. It has GDI and turbo. I believe Honda does a different method of GDI, where the valves don’t get as gummed up as other makes.
With that said another Honda engine, the Honda K-Series engine is built like a tank. Naturally aspirated, it is in the mid 100 horse power to low 200. But some crazy folks have pumped that engine up to 1000hp with turbos (and additional stuff), and it still keeps chugging along. Not many engines can take that much abuse.
I’m not sure where the L Series stands. But since it is a Honda engine, chances are they designed to at least withstand the turbo’s it came with, if not a little more for error.
Having a turbo isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it is just one more item that needs maintenance.
