10 Speed AT vs 5 Speed AT

Hi Scotty and all folks,

Today I test drove new mustang coupe with 10 speed automatic transmission.

All went pretty well, however, the transmission.

What I am feeling about is the new Ford 10 speed AT is not that handy compared to very old school Toyota 5 Speed AT.

What’s wrong with today’s technology?

Aisin builds better transmissions than Ford. That's a fact.

And ZF builds the best transmissions...

Over-engineered with planned obsolescence. And bad quality control, in the case of some manufacturers.

Unbelievable, I think modern ones are more complex apparently, but not all of manufacturers have enough ability to build them well.

Can’t agree with you more! Hardly any of the new ones are designed with longevity in mind. They’re all designed for performance & efficiency. Case in point, the garbage DSG/DCT transmissions on mass market vehicles.

A lot of people, as commented above, will say that the manufacturers are being forced to produce crappy product. That is not at all true.

They are given regulations they must meet. Whether or not they spend the money to come up with ways to make a quality product that meets expectations, or continue to do as the vast majority of American companies do and pocket the profit they make and produce a crappy product only to pass the buck and say "Well we HAD to make this" is up to them.

Lazy engineering and catering to shareholders will only get your business so far. Until the greed stops, corners will be cut and quality will be compromised. That's just how it is.

Naw... say it ain't true... people driven by greed!

Car manufacturers have a gun put to their heads (quite literally), and are forced to produce vehicles with the highest fuel efficiency possible regardless of diminishing returns or consequences for the buyer. As a result they implement all manner of complex money-pit technology to gain a fraction of a mile per gallon.

No what is wrong is with the idiotic engineers, why the heck do you need 10 gears in a coupe. It's not a semi...

Same thing in the new odysseys, 10 gears in a minivan? It's doing well but we don't need that.

They do it for fuel economy. Providing a 10 speed (more overdrive gears) for their vehicles improves their fuel economy rating (eventhough in reality it may not). Every manufacturer has to meet certain fuel economy standards, so this is one of the many ways. Another way, as numerous people pointed out here, is lighter weight oils. The oil weight manufacturers specify is all determined with fuel economy in mind, which is why most are switching to 0w-20.

What's wrong with a FORD 10 speed...it's not truly a Ford product.

GM and Ford held hands and it's their offspring.
