1993 GMC C1500 Constantly has problems.

I bought my 1993 c1500 V6 2WD about 8 years ago with 165K on it. It had minor problems then, Needed a battery, Alternator, and Tires.

It had treated me pretty well for the next 5 years or so.

Then it developed a odd problem where the check engine light would come on, and the engine speed would increase. and it would shift hard. sometimes hard enough to kill the engine. Usually turning the key off and starting the engine would make it run normal again.

I replaced a variety of things trying to figure out what the problem was, Including the MAP sensor, TPS sensor, EGR valve, all the vacuum lines and I could never figure out what the problem was.  But it was intermittent and did not stop me from driving the truck.

Then one day the transmission seemed to stop working. Then after turning the truck off and back on, it worked again.. I drove it into AAMCO for a diagnosis. They said they would have to remove it $500.. to diagnose the problem.. then $500 to put it back.. I walked away from that...

After pricing out new transmissions and replacing the shift solenoids I spent some personal reflection time lying under the truck, Looking at my can of worms and weighing my options.. I finally found the problem. A pinched and shorted wire for the transmission. damn grommet on the bell housing was too tight and wore through the wire loom and was digging into the wires that run out of the transmission.  After that it was back on the road steady.

Until this summer. Truck starts and drives for about a quarter mile before dying.  then refuses to stay running.

I decided the truck probably needs a refresher, It is at 191K Miles now.  I bought the Throttlebody Intake rebuild kit. Came with new fuel pressure regulator, gaskets, injector filters, and more. I re-did the Intake and also put on a new Idle-Air Control module and TPS sensor.

It didn't help anything, I actually think it sounds like it is running rougher now.

Now I thought maybe it was the fuel pump, or ignition control module.

Nope... neither of those things.. I had it towed to a local repair shop.

MAP sensor.... Again....  The mechanic apparently adjusted the timing too.

Well it drives without dying now. But has no acceleration. I called the shop back and they said drop it off and they would take a look again.

I am so sick and tired of the electronics on this truck.

How difficult would it be to rip out all of the electronics and go basic EFI or carbureted on this truck?  Would i have to swap to a different transmission? It has the 4L60E

Sorry for all your troubles.  Makes me glad I drive a 1981 truck.  The only electronics I have is the radio.  I would check your intake manifold for vacuum leaks.  These engines are kind of famous for that problem.
