2000 Subaru Forester L manual leaking

I have a 2000 Subaru Forester L manual and it has 200,300 miles on it and it has been in my family for a while. It has been all around the US and mainly in New York. It has a lot of rust from all the salt in New York and I try to clean it off as best as I can when I see it. My question about my car is that I have a leak near my engine. I’m not sure where it is coming from but I asked my mom and she said that it’s a gasket I forgot what type and for what. But it leaks down to the driver side axle and all on the middle frame piece. And is leaking from my filter but that might be my fault for putting it on hand tight. The leak drips onto the floor when I warm up the vehicle. But when it is cold it doesn’t leak or we’ll I don’t notice that it leaks. And I wanna make my car sound really cool but I don’t know how and I would like your advice.

It is very probably the head gaskets leaking. Subarus of that vintage are notorious for leaking head gaskets. They tend to leak externally before they start leaking internally and that is likely what you are seeing. So the head gaskets are on the way out. When they start leaking internally the oil and coolant will mix and it's game over.

Probably given the age and your reported condition of the vehicle (rust) it's not worth having the work done on it. Costs thousands because the engine has to be pulled out of the car. (If you could do the work yourself, or have a friend or relative that could do it, that would be a horse of a different color. The bulk of the replacement cost is labor.)

By the way it is a very bad idea to post phone numbers and email addresses on a public forum.

Well it would be nice to know what it is you are leaking. Is it oil, Coolant, Transmission? Please let us know. I would say you need to have a mechanic look at it and diagnose where it is coming from.

Also going forward don't wait until you notice things on the car to rinse it, Put it in your schedule every couple weeks go by a car wash and rinse it off, Especially underneath. There's also a product called fluid film. Available in a spray. It's kinda nasty but it does help slow down rust. You can spray it underneath your car on surfaces once every 2-3 months to keep it from getting worse. That in combination with rinsing it regularly should help you slow down any future weight loss problems with the car.
