Rough idle and engine cuts out

2002 dodge neon 112,000 miles

I have a 2002 neon and it always has run good..but here past few weeks it has developed a problem.  Sometimes if you are idling in drive at a stop sign it will begin to run rough and possibly die...but then it starts right back up...it only does it here and there not all the time. It drives down road fine. My wife complained a couple weeks ago being able to smell a gas smell on start up....I've only smelled that once and have no idea if it's part of this problem.  But the rough idle in drive while stopped is a issue....it has new plugs and coil pack that was put in couple years ago...any ideas would help..thanks

That car is over two decades old and that model is not known for long life - the problem could potentially be caused by a lot of things. Have you scanned for codes and live data? How old are air and fuel filters? Are spark plugs carbon fouled?

It doesn't sound like it. Bad pumps usually struggle during high fuel consumption (when you're into the throttle). Not idling.

 

Rough idle can be a lot of things. dirty injectors, vacuum leak, ...

Maybe fuel filter? It just started doing it off and on couple weeks ago..

No, when you're giving it gas and the fuel pump is weak, it wouldn't provide enough gas and your car would hesitate.

Try Carbon Clean by ATS. Your fuel injectors may be dripping, and it's being given too much gas. Cold engines and cold temperatures mean there will be extra fuel (running rich), because it's cold. Once it's warmed up, now you have too much gas and it stalls occasionally. An operating temperature engine requires a stochiometrically perfect running engine (neither rich, nor lean, where you have too much air, not enough fuel). Putting the engine under a load enriches the mixture, such as accelerating.
