2004 BMW z4 P3242 Trouble Code

Alcon,

I have owned a 2004 E85 BMW z4 2.5i with the 5 speed manual transmission and manual convertible top for 2+ years now. I bought it with 82,000 and it's currently got just north of 125,700 miles of trouble free driving even though it has clear damage from a minor wreck that it was in before I purchased it, there haven't been any issues with any part of the car except for one annoyance that I'd like to remedy. Ever since I've had the car, its had the trouble code P3242 "Map Cooling Thermostat Control Circuit High." It hasn't affected the car in any noticeable way, as live data from my BlueDriver scan tool shows that the operating temp of the car never passes 198F, I've lived with this code for two years now but I'd like to know where to begin to fix it. I'm a generator mechanic in the Air Force and when I see the phrase "control circuit high," that makes me think that a faulty voltage regulator might be the cause of this code, however generator mechanic skills don't always translate to car mechanic skills, so I'd like another opinion on the matter as to how to fix the condition causing this code. As of now I haven't done any troubleshooting for it, since it doesn't affect the driving of the car however, I see this as an opportunity to learn more about basic troubleshooting, and this seems like a golden opportunity.

Any information or advise on these two matters would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.

I recommend looking at or changing the thermostat.

I had to change mine out on my BMW X5 with the N52 engine. I don’t remember the code I got though, but I do remember it had to do with the thermostat.
