2004 Chevy Silverado SS Transmission Pump whine

I have 125,000 miles on my 04 Chevy Silverado SS and it runs great and has been well taken care of. Recently, I noticed a buzzing/whining noise when the truck is in park or neutral (sometimes reverse) after the engine has heated up. The noise doesn't happen on a cold crank. I took it by a shop and they told me right off the bat that it was the transmission pump. My question is what would be your advice, is failure imminent? He advised to put Lucas stop slip in it and hope for the best. If the transmission will fail soon, would it be worth replacing the transmission is this old of a vehicle that otherwise runs fine?

How much does the shop want for it?

the 460le is a decent transmission. To be worn out at 125K would be surprising, that shop sounds a little shady.. and the noise's location should be clearly identified first, before any recommendations

I haven't got an estimate yet. They basically said try the stop slip and see if that helps over the next couple of days. Any idea on a fair price for getting a new transmission installed in my vehicle? I'm in Charlotte, NC area.

@kshores1 depends on the transmission. An off the shelf re-manufactured 4-speed would be about $4k installed. More if you have 4WD. You can always shop around, but make sure they're dyno tested and you get a good guarantee.

I hope you tried taking off the belt to make sure it's not a power steering pump/alternator etc.

It doesn't appear to be the belt, but power steering fluid appears to be low. I'm certainly not super mechanically inclined, but would it make sense to have this noise only occur in park/neutral/reverse if it was the power steering pump or alternator?

@kshores1 probably, but for me it's easier to take the belt off and just check than shell out $4k+. Note that I'm not taking it off because the belt itself is the problem. When you take the belt off, you remove all the belt driven accessories from the equation. Alternators , PS pumps, AC compressors, etc tend to be noisy.
