2004 Mazda 3 hatchback leaking a/c into passenger compartment

Hi Scotty,

Thank you so much for your service and I have two issues I need your help with.

I know you (and many others) have covered this specific topic with videos but I can't seem to locate where the leak is occurring in my particular car. I just recently (10 days ago) purchased this clunker, used, hoping to make it last 2-3 years. It has 145k miles and other than the radio and some transmission slipping issues, it's fine. I noticed water on the passenger floor mats and the carpet under it very wet so I looked up the vids on YouTube and found your site. I've been binge watching your videos and found the one about this issue that you covered on your Toyota back in 2012 but I can't find the drain on my car.

Also, I'm not sure if it's related but the radio doesn't turn on at times and I am wondering if some water got onto the passenger side fuse box. It still lights up but the display (including the clock and audio system) doesn't turn on or is very dim at times. When it works, it works and sounds great, but when it doesn't, it's frustrating.

Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide.

Alvin

A slipping transmission is not "fine". The transmission is dying.

The AC condensate drain tube should be visible under the car or in the engine compartment in the area of the evaporator, which is generally located in the passenger side dashboard.

Chuck, thanks for your help. The trans is not actually slipping while driving, but it does take a second or so to start moving when it first starts up and I put it into gear. That's something I knew going in since the car is old enough to vote but I'll tackle that soon.
Anyway, as an interesting update, I removed the glove box assy. and ran the a/c for about 15 min but didn't see any sign of water in the compartment so I took it for a drive but still nothing until I set the airflow down to my feet, and sure enough, the condensation started dripping from the side of the console, just below the left corner of where the glove box would be. It felt very warm since the car was driving so that's where the condensation was coming from; just not sure what's causing it or how to remedy it.

Sounds like the condensation drain is clogged, assuming it's not coolant from a leaky heater core.

On another note, the whole reason I found this was that I was in the process of changing my cabin air filters when I found the wet carpet. I finally removed the filters and found them wet, as well as some water in the filter compartment. I don't know if thus is all related or not but it's confusing and confounding as heck to me.

Check to see if your heater core is leaking into the car.

Try this (mirror it for LHD vehicles) -

The 19 yr old factory stereo is probably on its way out. Unless you want to instal an aftermarket android, just put in a portable Bluetooth speaker in one of the cup holders, and call it a day.

and some transmission slipping issues

Thanks Thrust. I already had seen that video and found the specific tube in my car but it was clear and there was no water from that area. I found the actual water was coming from a different area a little higher up and closer to the center console. I still can't find the one that's supposed to be in the engine compartment below the heater and evaporator lines. I guess I will have to purchase a jack and crawl under the car to see if I can find it that way. Thanks again.

No problem. Visit your local auto zone or local Mazda dealer and ask them to print you a copy of the location and plumbing of the AC condensation drain. All the best!
