Should I keep my Lexus

Hi friends,

Kind of at a crossroads...Love my 2005 ES 330, but it needs about $4,000 to 5,000+ in A/C, blend door actuators, and blower motor replacement. I've already replaced timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, tires, and A/C compressor...it is pulling a P0174 code occasionally, too. Car has 183,000 miles; meticulous records from prior owner with consistent service.

Should I fix this car and hope for the best that more stuff won't keep going bad? Or should I just get a car payment for a newer car? Can really only afford probably something like a 2013 Rav 4...

Tired of a "car payment+" of repairs this often...but maybe fixing the A/C stuff will be all the expensive stuff it needs for a while?

Thanks!!

Tough call. It's getting up there in miles. So far the repairs sound pretty minor, but they will only get more expensive, and you can still sell it right now for a decent price. Once the engine or trans goes, then nobody will want it.

But trading for a 12 year old RAV4 isn't much better.

Every car needs timing belts, spark plugs and tires. You won't get away from that.

AC is an old car problem though.

Are you sure that you really needed a water pump. I know dealerships love replacing those even when they're fine. Where are you getting your service done?

@imperator Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I would hope the engine and transmission on a Lexus won't wear out...the engine doesn't burn a lick of oil, thankfully.

I've been going to the Toyota dealership to avoid some local shops that haven't been reliable...

every automatic transmission wears out eventually.

Stealerships make most of their money on service. They are part changing crooks and they will bleed you dry. Find a good independent mechanic and you won't be paying $5k for routine things.

@imperator Thanks for the advice.
