2008 Nissan Rogue Catalytic Converter and California car no longer in California

Hi, Scotty!  Love your videos!  Very helpful.  Thanks!

I have a 2008 Nissan Rogue that is C.A.R.B. equipped.  It's in Maine which has similar rules.  It has 175,000 miles on it but runs well.  The manifold/cat converter cracked and needs to be replaced.  I called the State office that handles this and they issue exemptions if the value of the car is really low.  They don't expect you to put a lot of money into a really old car.  So, they said they'd issue an exemption that I could put a NON-California catalytic converter manifold on the car ($250) vs. the Cali one ($1,500).  That's great.

Then, I thought - Would it fit?  Would it mess up the computer that checks this stuff?  Should I replace the two O2 sensors?  With which ones, the Cali type or the non-Cali type?

I've ordered a non-Cali cat/manifold (they are one-piece units) as it appears identical and would bolt on without a problem.  I'm thinking this would all bolt together just fine and I can salvage the old O2 sensors (both upper & lower) and put them on the new manifold.

Do you think this would work?  Or, do I need to do something else (other than get rid of the Rogue)?  I don't know if the computer can/needs to be reprogrammed?

I called Nissan dealers and repair places and they just don't have the answer to any of this.  My guess is they never encountered this.

I appreciate the help!  This is for my sister's car and she has limited income.

Thanks,

Chuck Gage

Hard to say on that one you start modifying stuff there's no saying what's going to happen I would just say try the nine California cat and see what happens

Thanks for the suggestion. I think we'll do that. Worst case, it doesn't work.
