I have a 08 Silverado WT has the Flex Fuel and Cylinder deactivation feature. At 341K miles needs a refresh or more likely a rebuild. Runs and drives. Has a #1 misfire code and appears to have the common collapsed valve lifter issue.
What is the best practice to rebuild by replacing the cylinder deactivation features parts with the standard kit? And obtain a tune? Or keep them in place with the flex fuel and deactivation kit and buy the deactivation dongle that bypasses the deactivation feature?
anyone on here “been there done that “? What is a good dongle if I keep the LS deactivation feature?
In my opinion a tune is the way to go because its a once and done kind of thing although a dongle exists as an alternative for a reason. Typically a tune is going to cost more but sometimes if you know a guy in your town who does that kind of work for the other shops you can find the cheapest price by going to him/her directly. These days shops are moving toward specializing in the niche areas so they don't need to buy ALL of the expensive specialized equipment. For example one shop might buy all of the GMC tuning equipment, another might buy an expensive rack for doing alignments and they will swap those services with each other if a customer comes in needing that kind of work done. Replacing the Active Fuel Management system is a must do for sure.
