Scotty.  My friend is selling a 2011 Silverado with 100k.   Was 2011 a good year for GM?   Automatic 5.3liter my friend only wants 10k which seems cheap for these days.   If I get a mechanic to check it out what do you think?

That engine (in fact all those 5.3L V8’s since 2007) has cylinder deactivation (or what GM calls AFM or active fuel management) which can wear out/damage the engine over time.  GM never really got it right, and that particular truck is already at 100,000 miles.  Plus you have propensity for electrical issues as well (another GM weak point).  I would pass on any Silverado with that engine from model year 2007 and newer.  You are better off looking at the 2500 HD series if you want a GM truck.

Not unless you want to ruin a (long?) friendship..

No. Their transmission isn’t the best, it has cylinder deactivation which GM is notorious for having the worst cylinder deactivation and not the best interior or exterior quality. Get a F-150.

My definition of when GM quality changed was after the 2009 bankruptcy. Although GM didn't make the best models in the mid to late 2000s, they are nowhere near close to the quality of GM today. That model was introduced before the bankruptcy so it shouldn't be terrible. I would do some research on that vehicle and see if you are getting a good buy for that vehicle.
