Hey Scotty, so I am a student trying to choose a good car for myself for college. I have found a 2011 Kia Forte with 114k miles, and a 2005 Toyota Avalon with 130k miles. I know you always preach Toyota’s but I wanted to know if there was any exception with the year difference or if Kia produced a really good forte in 2011.
Get the Toyota. They last forever, especially the Avalons which have the V6.
As Scotty always says, Kia and Hyundai are good up to 100,000 miles, so this Forte you consider, is just ending his lifetime.
@yaser
Uh, no. My whole family owned Hyundais and KIAs and we never had problems with them. As long as you take care of the cars, they will take care of you. I own a 15-year-old 2005 Tucson with the V6 and AWD, 255,000kms on it, no issues other than the heater, which I can easily fix when I know what the problem is.
And FYI, I have an aftermarket supercharger from the tiburon on my car, it's pushing double the power for about a year now. Transmission is doing fine considering its 15 years old and handling more than 350+ ft-lbs daily.
I don't understand the flame Scotty puts on these cars. They're great cars. I beat the shit out of mine, but I actually maintain the damn thing.
No one takes care of them, hence why they give you problems.
@Flukey
They are not even close to the quality of Toyota. Everyone knows that.
The history of maintenance is not mentioned in the question, but regardless of that, Toyotas outlast almost any other car brands.
Also, if you baby any car, it can last long time either the Chrysler products.
@yaser
I said above that I absolutely don't 'baby' my car lmao. I rev the shit out of it, I beat the shit out of it - but I actually maintain the car. The engine is under wayyyyy more stress now that I have the supercharger on it and its running on a standalone ECU, and guess what? It's still alive a year later.
Yeah, Toyotas last longer - yes, they're known to last long if properly maintained. But that doesn't take away the fact that these cars if you maintain them - will last just as long as a toyota, if you're not a dumbass with them.
@yaser
Just a follow up. I am going to test drive the Kia today and plan on test driving the Toyota in the following week. Since I am still a minor my mother has input and her concern is the age of the Toyota, but as I see it; the car only has 130k miles and age doesn’t mean the car will perform worse. My first car was a 2004 Mitsubishi Galant and it was a nightmare, so she is of the opinion “why pay four times as much for a car only one year newer.” Am I correct to tell her that it doesn’t work like that?
Well, both are really good cars. Both are very reliable vehicles IF you take care of them. But if you cared about power, the Avalon is more powerful than the KIA.
Its all about the maintenance history but in this case the Avalon would hold up much better if both maintained the same.
Anyone who still says Hyundai Kia is unreliable etc does not anything about cars or has obsolete knowledge. Since 2010, they have behind the second most reliable car after Toyota, but number 1 in terms of what you get for the money. Scotty has a bunch of videos saying he's impressed with their build quality. Ignore the old uninformed commenters, i have a 2010 Forte 2.0 going to 234000 km now looking new running new. Cheers
