Hi All,
My sister has the above titled SUV. It currently has 112,000 miles. When coming to a stop on hills (uphill) it shudders & stalls. The car will start up again once it's back in P or N. I've done some research & I believe the problem is the torque converter in the CVT. Apparently this is a common problem (not just on hills though) that Subaru issued a TSB along with extending the warranty to 10 years or 100,000 miles for 1.5 million cars. Needless to say I think she's SOL due to the mileage.
If it is determined to be the transmission should she have hers rebuilt, replaced or, due to the cost, buy another vehicle. Of course if you think the problem lies elsewhere chime in.
TIA, let me know your thoughts plz.
From what I've read you're looking at about $8000 to replace a Subaru CVT with a rebuilt unit (dealer pricing). You can check on that but if it's anywhere near that cost doesn't seem worth it on a 10-year-old Outback.
You could try having the fluid changed and see if that helps, but the damage is probably already done.
