Hey Scotty, back in October I bought a 2012 Tacoma 4x4 SR5 automatic with 88k miles. This is my first truck ever. I've tried looking on different Tacoma forums about LSDs and what types of fluids, and a lot of people contradict one another about the type of fluid, and whether or not to have limited slip additive in models later than '09. So I've decided to come to the guru. 😆 My 2 questions for you are:
1. Is it ok to use fluid with limited slip additive in the transfer case?
2. Does a newer truck even need limited slip additive in the differentials?
Thanks
No LS in your transfer case.
Thank you. I think I'm gonna go with Mobil 1 Delvac 75w90 for both diffs and transfer case
Have you checked the owner's manual?
I did, it doesn't specify whether or not to have LS additive, only specifies the weight. So I called a Toyota dealer, and they don't even use the same weight that the manual specifies smh
I've never heard of a transfer case that needs additive. Limited slip is a term used for axles only.
Have you verified that you HAVE a LS differential? If the manual doesn't indicate to use additive in the axle, then it probably doesn't take it. As far as I know , LS additive was only used in a few different kinds of differentials that used friction for locking engagement. You know how people are on the internet ... they just love adding things that aren't necessary. I would say use plain gear oil, and if you experience any problems, then you can think about additives. Gear oils come in different weights. Axles aren't too picky about it. You won't notice a difference between 75W90 and 80W90.
Thanks for the info. Turns out I have an auto lsd controlled by brake system. And this is exactly why I've always done my own maintenance on all my vehicles and will continue to, because even the original manufacturer dealership isn't using the right products
